how to get $1Mil + in commission

Would you say it is possible to make that much as an AE at a start up or only big enterprises?

It’s highly unlikely to make a million at any company with less than $100M in funding. That happens for most companies at C rounds. At that stage you are scaling up from startup to mid-market and the only sustainable way is through consistent large deals. The company also has to have the cash flow or comp budget for 1-2 500k+ commission earners where most Series A-B barely have the funds to make it a year let alone pay commission on massive deals.

Be wary of closing big deals and expecting massive commission checks at start-ups. As @poweredbycaffeine mentioned, they may not have the cash flow to pay, which means you get shorted.

Been there, been the reason we got an emergency big-deal clause added to the comp plan over the weekend that capped payouts.

However, if you believe in the company, etc... don't be afraid to negotiate for equity to make up for the capped comp on something massive.

It's rare at large companies too. I know some people who have done it, but it's not consistent. That $1M payout came after years of working on the account in all cases.

What is your commission rate? Figure out the size and amount of deals needed to hit it. #Math

Depends on company, comp plan, region, accounts, product…. It’s possibly but highly unlikely and usually a one off

I'm at a large enterprise and did 800k this year as an IC rep. Start new role as RSD next week. It's possible, and didn't take me too long. I've been here 20 months. Just needed the stars to align on a few things, but really sold a lot of value of our software with key players in the accounts that I knew had budget. Looking forward to watching some reps on my future team next year go out and repeat the process. Even in a recession, there are companies looking to spend money if it saves them in the long run or even helps generate revenue.
$1M is possible, but a lot of things need to line up and you have to absolutely hustle to get there.

depends on the industry, seen it at start ups and big corps in software but ive seen it more in insurance, financial advising and med device. We've seen movies like wolf of Wall Street and pursuit of happiness and know stock brokers can clear that type of money. I think its def easier to make that money in a commission only role vs salary and commission bc of the higher % that comes with commission only.

Tempting to believe, but I agree with the WR. There many variables that need to play out and with that many variables it extremely difficult to predict the outcome.

It depends upon what you are selling. Of course it's possible if the deals you are selling are more than 7 figures. The way I always looked at it was that if I can get substantial equity, then smaller commission is ok because there will be a big pay day at the end.

Luck is all it is. I have a colleague in a start up who is working on a deal that would skyrocket the company. His commission on this deal is currently standing at around 6 mil. If it closes he will retire. So at the end of the day luck has a lot to do with it. This is a very close colleague and in the past I know his commissions have been 5 or 6 figure commissions and never once saw him break 1 mil or even 500k.
