How to get a raise, When your boss doesn't control it???

I report to the director of sales. But i found out that he does not have control over how much a person can get in a raise.....

has anyone else dealt with this?

especially since I suspect my base is way lower than comparable roles in the company.

How do you close a deal when the person you're talking to doesn't control the budget?

Exactly what I was going to say. Who controls it and why? How do you interface with them?

If you're a top performer, make it known that you're dissatisfied with your current compensation and want a raise. Your boss will more than likely move mountains to ensure you stay.

If you're not a top performer you probably won't get one so your best bet is to find a place with better pay.

I had a title promotion and was supposed to get a raise. When my paycheck came in, and there wasn't a bump, I went to my boss. He said, "Oh, I'll look into it." The next time I brought it up, he said, "You make too much money. You're capped out. They won't let me give you a raise." I pushed back. Still a no go.

I asked my peers if they got a raise when they had the title bump. They had. 🤔

So, I went to HR, and said "I'm confused. Someone people are getting this raise, but I'm being told that I'm don't get one. Can you help me understand why?" One week later, HR had it fixed. I got my money + back pay.

If the door is locked, find a window.

He has a budget or the means to get it done.

It might be difficult, but if he's at all a good boss he can get it done.

I'd push on why and how. Why do you deserve the raise and how if he doesn't have the authority can it be done. "So I can never get my wage changed as a long as I work here?" If you are feeling confrontational

He might not make the call, but he will influence it. And if he doesn’t influence it, then go directly to the person who does. But make sure your house is clean before you do, I’ve seen too many sellers who expect raises just for “time served” —

I used to subscribe to the "I deserve a raise because I've been here so long" way of thinking. What an entitled shit I was.

If you haven't "added value" during your tenure yet you expect a raise you belong in government.

If you are going to ask for a raise, now is the time to do it. The labor market is insane right now and companies are paying for talent. He might not have control over it, but you have control over your future with the company. If there is no raise even available, ask about a timeline for your future at the company.
