I regret dropping out of the interview process for an SDR job.

Couple weeks back I interviewed for an SDR job. Partly for practice, partly because I didn't think I'd be able to find anything else. Realized the commute would be closer to 2 hours one way than 1, and getting an Airbnb for a couple of nights during the week (to avoid the commute) would be cost-prohibitive, plus I had two AE interviews lined up, so I bowed out of their process.

But now both AE jobs turned me down right before the final round of interviews and I have nothing in the hopper. At least if I had the SDR job I'd have some income coming in. But now I'm up against the clock as most companies will shut down recruitment come November. Feel like I definitely screwed myself.

Any reason to be optimistic here? Or did I really mess up?

You dropped out for solid reasons besides the AE job possibilities. Donโ€™t beat yourself up. Just keep looking. Some companies have different FY cycles; you may just find something.

Pick yourself up, dust yourself off. Get out there and keep looking. Look under very rock, especially the one no wants to look under. Don't quit.

The only jobs you should regret right now are the ones you donโ€™t apply for.

No matter how confident you are in the process keep your funnel full. Apply and interview nonstop until youโ€™ve started and are happy in your next role.

2 hours both way is insane - that is not a sustainable life. up at 5:30 to get there at 8 and not home til 7:30ish, plus then you need to eat whoops now its already time for bed! If you consider a job that far I'd say move closer

Just moved into this house a year and a half ago. We also have family living with us. Not really feasible to move at this moment unless it's a really good job. $50k base/$70k OTE for an SDR job with uncertain path to AE isn't exactly it.

You learned a great lesson. Donโ€™t bow out til they show you the door. Get the offer and then decide if you want it. No reason to back out of something you arenโ€™t even in.

It wasnโ€™t favourable but donโ€™t give up as itโ€™s not a solution. Keep your ears and eyes open, you never know. All the best !

"getting an airbnb a couple nights a week to avoid the commute" - it sounds like this wasn't the move regardless.
Don't beat yourself up for this.

Steve Jobs said "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future." However, you're not Steve Jobs.

This is not the time to second guess yourself. You already said you'd lose money with this job. Don't look back - you aren't going that way. โค๐ŸฆŠ
