IMO, having someone do a presentation on a product during an interview is dumb. Thoughts?

Why would it help anyone to see how someone sells when they know nothing about a product? Just seems like a waste of time.

I HATE this. I had to do this just this week. One of my biggest interview pet peeves.

I think if you know how to interview a sales person you can get all the info out of them by asking questions and then letting them ask questions. Interviewing is very similar to closing. Easy to weed out people. But some people are good at faking. Definitely a hard decision.

But I still hate the presentation part of an interview. Cringeworthy in my book.

I don't love it. A hiring manager should be able to determine whether someone has the skills to make it in the role based on their previous work experience and how they interview.

I agree. It should be a presentation on something you already know a ton about! Let the candidate pick any topic and teach me about it

I like to have an interviewee give me a presentation on teaching a skill. If you can present and keep my attention for 5 minutes or so on a mundane skill, I think you’ll be able to do it with our product.

For an A.E position I could see it being relevant but for a non-closing S.D.R position I don't think it's needed

I agree with this too, I went through a lengthy sales interview process and they pulled all kinds of bullshit psychoanalytic tests on me, including a final presentation, which is just them trying to pick you apart.  I prepped my ass off and took the criticism in stride and then once I got the offer I decided that I don’t want to work for a place that plays this many games.

Depends what you’re looking for, IMO.

if it’s for knowledge of your product then, yeah, kind of dumb. However, if it’s to see how they do discovery and what kind of questions they ask then I think it’s a great idea.

Granted that’s more of a pitch and I hate doing presentations in general.

I don't hate it. Shows how you put together a proposal and ask for business. It eliminates a lot of knuckle draggers

Mock presos with people that aren't buyers [aka salespeople and VPs of sales] are never realistic or particularly beneficial in my mind.  But lots of places like to do it that way.

I also think men are more naturally attracted to leadership roles, so they're more likely to apply for management positions.

Good sales leaders are hard to come by in general. Women are rare in sales. If you're looking for a good sales leader that's also a woman your pool is pretty damn narrow.
