Interviewer asks to see a live demo

I have an upcoming interview where they want to see me run a live discovery + demo of some software or service.

Showing them a demo of my company's software isn't an option.

So I'm wondering -- do I just show them something as basic as Gmail or Google Workspace so they see that I'm comfortable solving their pain points based on what I learn during discovery?

Any tenured gurus here have any experience of being in a similar situation?

UPDATE: did a product demo on Gmail. Killed it. Final round interview is tomorrow

How the fuck do they expect you to run a demo of something you haven't been trained on? This is a bizarre request, especially since they aren't letting you demo your own company's. It took me months to learn to do a proper demo and although I'm super good at it and I'm super hot I'm still learning every day how to do a better one after a year. Fuck that interviewer

Exactly right.ย  ย I'm confused as to what they think they'll learn about the prospective employee.

This is stupid and a waste of time. A good preview of what your future would look like.ย

I would sign up for a trial account of some software that I might have sold before / related to what I sold before my current job. I would choose something where I am a champion and not the opp people.

Curious why you can't do your own?

I am as well.ย  ย Usually, if they want you to demo something you're unfamiliar with, they'll provide you with some details and a framework from which to work.ย  This seems very loose.

Did they specify what they want to see? If itโ€™s any software Iโ€™d try using something like Mailchimp. Free account and had a lot of features and benefits

If you're using Calendly or anything similar I would do something like that. I agree that this is a very strange request, but if you have to do it then I would keep it simple.ย

I've asked folks to teach me anything that they want to teach me, but I have to be conversational about the topic when I leave the room. However, if you want to demo something then demo the power of an iPhone. Everyone has them, knows them, and you should be able to articulate the value.

Are you me? lol I have two interview demos next week and I also don't currently sell something I can demo. I'm seeing if I can get access to my old company's trial software but worst case I'll use some sort of slide deck as that idea was floated by the director I spoke with earlier.ย

These are more to gauge if we can conduct a demo (setting expectations, laying a call framework, and asking good questions).ย
But yeah I'm in the same boat my friend.

In the same boat as you. If it makes you feel any better every last round or two of interviews I have been in with software companies have asked for the same song and dance. I ask for everything lol. Login to their sandbox, all materials they provide for training and marketing, scenario info with as much detail as possible. Try walking them through the sales methods you are most comfortable with and applying their value props, solution fit. They just want to see that you can connect the dots from the prospects problem and their solution. If youโ€™re worried they want more ask what you will be graded on.

Yea this is weird. they should have given more instruction on how to go about this. I have had to do a demo in the past but the instructions were clear and I knew what to study and work on.ย

You don't need to answer all prospect's questions on a demo.

should you always send the recording of your demo or only send it if a client asks for it?
