Interviewing Woes

As I'm sure everyone else here is, I get hit up by recruiters on the daily. I'm typically hesitant to respond to roles from recruiters with positions that are "small" or "start-up" firms (aka non established "large" orgs).

As of recent, I started to take conversations with them. Started looking for new gigs after feeling slight burn-out with my current position. The past 2-3 times I've gone somewhat far along the process, only to be told "we've decided to move forward with someone who more closely aligns with the position". One firm even went as far as doing background (100% clean) and bother people I provided as references.

Was curious if anyone else has noticed this? Is it me? Is there something I am not doing correctly during the process or conversation? I think it only stings since they reached out to me first.

For Context - nearly 6 years in Software sales. Nearly 3 years w/current company (Club year 1, 103% to goal year two). First Company out of college - promoted SDR to AE consistent overachiever on metrics KPI's Etc.

Gotta be selective about which recruiters you respond to. Notice if they actually read your damn profile or if they sprayed and prayed ya.

I learned this pretty quick myself. Quite the nasty little hobbits they can be.

job hunting is a funny thing. Lots of people potentially get involved. I've been the second place guy more times than I can count. Recruiters are the worst. They will be all over you at one point and then completely ghost you.

Not sure what specific advice I can give, as I don't know what the potential employer saw as "gaps" or "not aligned". It has happened to me before as well - recruiters want a big pipeline too, but get down to specifics, and you're just not quite what the hiring manager had in mind for that role. If it's a big enough company, sometimes there are other positions with other hiring managers, and that could work out well. I have a friend who did that successfully.

You can keep taking these calls and going down the process, but if you're feeling burnt out, maybe it's time you were also proactively looking as well.

Really surprised to hear about the background/reference check one...

The other stuff happens, but that one's strange

Was it a recruiting firm or recruiter at the actually company? Recruiting companies sometimes have you do the background check early but never with an internal recruiter

That is pretty weird, my guess is loss budget/not allowed to be hired is a big reason why this might be happening too.

I would also keep in mind that there are other recruiters for the same company doing the same thing, plus I'm sure your recruiter brought a few candidates to the process as well. the rejection sucks, really sorry you're going through it, keep on going and one will work out, I promise!

IMO there are 4 shitty recruiters for every good one. Don't read into it too much. I personally never had a good experience with any and I always get blown up on LI by them.
