Is my title going to be a problem?

I'm thinking it'll soon be time for me to leave my current company that I've been with for 5+ years. For context, I was previously an Enterprise Account Executive at a different company for ~2 years. This was prior to COVID and it was a remote job that I hated. I left the Enterprise AE role to join an in office company and start on their SMB team. I quickly moved up and have consistently been a top performer. I went from SMB to MM to Enterprise to hybrid MM/Enterprise to MM back to hybrid MM/Enterprise. (Over the last 3+ years there has been a ton of changes which is why the hybrid MM/Enterprise. Management can't make up their minds for our sales team).

Anyways. I am an IC. However, as I've progressed at this company my title has changed from Sales Executive > Sr. Sales Executive > Sales Director > Sr. Sales Director.

My question is, if I'm looking to change jobs for a new Enterprise AE role, should I change my LinkedIn and Resume to be only "Enterprise AE"? Like I said, I'm an IC. I don't "direct" any team and no one reports to me. I've talked with recruiters in the past who were confused by my title.

Thanks for any input here.

Nah. They are looking for keywords over the description anyway.

You could just say Enterprise AE and leave it at that. Everyone knows what that means.

You could also say Senior Enterprise AE as a promotion, but leave it at that, don't involve more titles that are not applicable to the job you want.

Both are 100% accurate, and plenty of people put a title that's not company official on their resume, for the sole purpose of ensuring people understand what they do.

There is no need to talk about moving from SMB, to MM, to Enterprise across the company on your resume. At the most, you could say you moved to that company and started with their SMB and quickly found yourself back in Enterprise and leading the way, hence the seniority. But that's for your back pocket when interviewing and only if applicable.

If you want a new Enterprise AE role....then that's the job titles people should read. Forget the rest.

yeah I wouldn't worry too hard. And I believe in accuracy on resumes. If they need clarity they'll ask.

Don’t think it really matters, then again recruiters power through resumes so changing it to match the job title could make a difference

It won't actually matter that much I believe, as long as the history of your jobs description you'll state is gonna be clear enough to clarify your career journey including the handled tasks you did at your current company and your previous ones!

Doesn’t really matter as long as you have the history on LinkedIn. Title matters, but only if you don’t have the experience.

Shouldn't really matter. The way you have it described above would show consistent growth and promotions. I'd leave out all the changes between market sizes.

You can basically make your title on your resume anything you want, within reason.

But I don’t see your title being an issue in a lateral move.

I wouldn't worry about it, can always attach some stats into LI so that people understand you are an IC

I think it is how you talk in interviews. Sometimes I have been very confident and they want me for Enterprise roles and other times not and it is like here is an SDR role

People have job titles like "sales ninja" and still get jobs. I wouldn't worry about it
