Is RTO An Acceptable Reason to Start Interviewing

Recently talked with a buddy and we landed on the topic of RTO push back. She is someone who enjoys going to the office, I absolutely love being remote.

Right now, so many companies are making a push for the employees going back to the office, mostly doing a Hybrid of 2-3 days in. I said I would 100% start interviewing if I was forced to go in, even though I enjoy my current role a lot.

She then mention, that's a little dramatic given I really like role and if the commute is under 30 min. I should just suck it up if the job checks ever single box.

Can RTO be the only reason to start looking for new opportunities?

If you value remote work and work won’t accommodate that’s an easy opp to look around. Your life is getting worse because of a decision the company is forcing onto you. No harm in looking.

Having a strong opinion doesn't make you dramatic. You could've easily said she was a bit dramatic for having a different opinion.

At the end of the day you can interview at any time for any reason you want. You are responsible for your life/happiness. No one else. And your decisions sure as shit aren't anyone else's business.

Honestly, that's a question you can really only answer for yourself. If my office was still just right nearby and I could pop in a few days a week with no horrible commute, I might not mind it. But having been remote for years, I'd have a hard time with a demand for my presence when it doesn't affect how I do my job. It would just make me surly. I'd probably do it though, as I really like where I work.

It was a big factor behind my last move. Definitely not the only one, and if you really like your company see if you swing some kind of agreement that works for you.

Totally understandable though.

I think it’s up to the person honestly. For me, hybrid would be exciting because I like remote but have never gotten to experience an in-office setting and actually knowing my coworkers as people. But if you are someone who values remote work, definitely a reason to explore opportunities to accommodate that.

It's up to each individual to be honest, I know for me personally right now its a factor since I know I'm going to be making a cross-country move next year, and will need that flexibility from an employer to make that move.

What would it cost them to make you reconsider going back to the office? Have that conversation. But everyone is entitled to draw their own lines. If yours is not coming into the office, draw that line.

Shoot for hybrid, but at the end of the day if there is no compromise then look elsewhere.

I live somewhere that I literally couldn't do hybrid, as my company has no offices in my city. But if you are in the same town, I don't think hybrid 2 days, 3 tops, is out of line.

Try before you make a decision. You might not be the only one feeling the same way.

There's never not a reason to interview. Keep those interviewing skills sharp.

I wish I had an office I could pop into a day per week. More than that is nonproductive for me since I have a great home office.

I would say for me its a huge yes. I have been in SaaS sales and I've been WFH since 2010.. I value the extra time I get to spend with my family by avoiding my 45 min commute. This day in age thats a ton of gas savings alone. It also gives me back almost 2 hrs per day to spend time with my family, take the kids to activities, dr appts, etc.

Things would get very complicated for my wife if I didnt work from home so for me its a dealbreaker to be in a hybrid situation, unless we are talking about come to the office once per quarter, or what not.
