Is sales a cop-out career?

I have had friends early in my career that used sales jobs as a way to work for good money with part-time hours by hitting numbers as fast as possible so they DON'T have to do more.

How do you take sales

Sales is the ultimate non-cop out career. When the amount you work directly correlates with your pay, that's the career path for those who want to work hard and achieve.

cop out = govt job. Fixed salary, 0 turnover or incentive to work harder. See: DMV

The best explanation of the DMV. If anyone has had to go since the pandemic, it's somehow gotten worse.

My parents thought so until they saw the lifestyle I can afford. We deal with so many complexities. Our jobs aren't clear cut, and there's no "right" way to do them. At the end of the day, sales people tend to be some of the most free-thinking, ambitious, and energizing savages out there!

No way, for any role and future career i think everyone should do a mandatory 2 years in sales. Anytime I've hired anyone with no sales background (into support, office management, casual events people etc) I've always regretted it. Sales breeds work ethic, empathy, public speaking / conversational skills and drive... you can't teach that without time in the seat.

i'd love for some of our implementation consultants to grasp that...literally dealing with a customer issue post-sale right now bc of the way a consultant spoke to the customer...made a mountain out of a molehill.

SaaS tech startup sales is a great way to go for a career.

Equity in the company with a chance for big payouts on exits.

Upward expansion opportunities as work from SDR to enterprise AE.

Can always shift into people management.

I'd argue it's one of the more prominent ways to go for a clear career path.

Yeah nah, the only cop-out careers are marketing, teachers, and lawyers. If that offends anyone, well... I don't care and you're in the wrong forum.

If you're not good at sales you starve and that is the way it should be. You can't just casually "do" sales and become successful.

I pay more in taxes every year than a lot of my friends earn in gross income. If that's a cop-out career, then they can cop these nuts and stay poor boiiiiiii

None of those are cop-out careers, and yes, I work in SaaS sales as an AE.

If you think you can dick around and be a legit lawyer you're showing how little you know.

Teachers don't get paid enough to be considered a cop-out career, so even the ones that don't work as hard/well wouldn't be considered cop-outs.

Finally, as funny as it is to roast Marketers, you clearly know nothing about business if you think Marketing isn't important or is easy.

We have all heard people say something along the lines of “if X doesn’t happen I’ll just go to law school/become a teacher.” Great teachers are underpaid, though.

Great teachers are massively underpaid. The problem is that teaching is a profession that nobody can seem to put a good metric on how to measure though.

That's one of the unique things about the nature of our profession. At the end of the day, people really care about one metric.

Well said. Another problem is that the profession itself generally resists any methods of measuring or ranking, but that's a much longer conversation.

Not sure you can think if it as a cop out career when to most people its likely one of the least desirable white collar career choices. I can see the side of it that its a cop out in the fact that at times I don't have to work as hard and can make at times better money than those with advanced degrees.

I think Ziglar said something like:

Sales can either be the hardest, highest paying job or the easiest, lowest paying job you can have.

I love the fact that I get out what I put in.

Then they got what they wanted I suppose, but that doesn't make sales a cop-out career at all.

Has it been traditionally a place when not much development took place and all the corners cut? Absolutely, but that isn't the case anymore. The weak will not survive and anyone cutting corners and being a stereotypical 2nd hand car salesman won't last long at any decent company. IMO, of course

Yep sales is most def NO cop-out. Every job should be performance based.

It's absolutely NOT a cop-out career. It's a career in which you'll never have to ask anyone for a "raise" because it's completely within your power to just go out and get a raise for yourself.
