Is this the right process to land an SDR role?

I haven't been able to find an SDR role even though I've been looking for months... I feel like I'm overqualified for many of the SDR roles yet I can't land a damn thing. So, I'm just wondering If I have the right approach here.

  1. Find Job Opening
  2. Apply via website with resume
  3. LinkedIN Message to talent recruiter + sales manager
  4. 2 days after, email talent recruiter
  5. 4 days after, click on LinkedIn profile that I've message at step 3 so they have a "this person viewed your profile notification" as a reminder
  6. 6 days after, follow up on linkedIn with people from step 3 by using video

For context, I was 1 of the top 2 salesmen at a GM car dealership with closing rate that is 14% higher than industry average for 2 years + marketing manager for dealership & helped them become #1 in their region in 3 years time.

I also dropped out of uni 2 years in because I wasn't learning anything new during my bachelor's of management. I just decided to rent out the textbooks for free at my local university. Might affect my credibility but this is a sales role, I'm not building fuckin rockets so I'd assume my past sales experience to be good enough for credibility in an SDR role?

Pare this down. You've got some good stats and nuggets to build a narrative, but it's buried in too much word salad. Write like you speak!

Also, the DnD style rankings on the left hand side are odd. Might even be throwing off application tracking systems.

You also dedicate a lot of space to explain why you dropped out. And the first sentence "It was too political" could be a red flag for many reasons. I'd either say you studied for 2 year, or nix the whole thing.

Here's mine for comparison... Note I've been in the industry 10 years longer yet have about 1/3 the text.

Seems like I fell prey to the logical fallacy that more is better...

Thanks for the advice, I will make the changes asap & get back to applying!

Out of curiosity, given the fact that you have some great advice on resume building... Do you mind sharing any tips on interviewing?

Nothing to add to this excellent advice, really. On any resume, I'd counsel anybody to leach any statements that are negative or charged, so I completely agree with braintank. Anything you put should be spun in a positive manner (completed 2 years before taking an excellent opportunity and postponing completion of my degree, for example, is better than throwing shade). Best of luck to you!

I would start copying and pasting parts of the job description and put them in your resume.

If you are not getting past point 1 and 2, there is an issue with the resume. It should be customized for different roles. Are you looking for an SDR role in software industry? If yes, I would also go through academy section of Bravado to make myself familiarized with the terms this industry use.

Also, you have to press more on numbers on the resume as it speaks for you. Example - 14% is great but as a hiring manager I don’t know what the industry standard is - is it $10 or $10m, be as specific as possible.

There are also many groups on linkedin that posts SDR jobs.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it!

I'm quite familiar with the base terminology for the tech. industry as I've been studying it quite a lot for the past 2 years. Maybe I'll put more emphasis on this in my resume & outreach since I don't have tech. experience.

Thanks for the advice!

You'll get something. The market has gotten weird lately. You're putting in more effort than 95% of people applying

Highly recommend to look up ATS friendly resume template.

In summary robots now view your resume first & determine if it’s good or not for the recruiter to even view.

As others have said make sure you have enough of the keywords of the JD in your resume

I believe job scan does a fantastic result in determining if your resume is ATS friendly.
