‘Jr.’ SDR/AE Roles

When I was looking for a job last month, I came across a lot of ‘Jr.’ SDR and AE roles.

I somewhat understand a junior AE role as it could be looked at easing someone into a closing role while still building pipeline for themselves/others.

As far as a junior SDR role goes, I don’t get this one at all. The role is, by nature, already an entry level role for people looking to break into sales/grow in an org.

Is it just a way to pay someone less money for doing the same work? Would love to hear the WRs take on this.

Never understood. Instantly sullies and undervalues the employee. A friend of mine's startup was acquired and he got the genius title of 'Junior CEO'.

Yep. "We're looking for a Jr AE with 10+ years experience in enterprise selling with strong connections to CEO/CTOs. Base pay is 40k with OTE of 75k."

Bilingual is strongly preferred.

Yeah that’s what I thought. Just so weird seeing an entry level role being knocked down even more.

yeah like what is a 'junior' sdr ? It's already the most junior role in sales.

Definitely targeted towards people who don’t know the hierarchy’s and whatnot. People that do would know it’s BS at first glance

WTF is that?

Your analysis is correct. IMO it should be AE, Sr. AE etc., but 'Jr.' could make some sense there.

Jr. SDR? GTFO

I think you answered your own question - it’s a way to pay someone less for basically the same work.

Maybe you have less quota ? Or you’re like an assistant SDR? Or SDR in training?

I’m definitely grasping at straws but that is all I can come up with.

Like you said, definitely a reach but it’s either that or a justification to pay them less

Pay them less now and less later. Start a jr SDR at $30k base vs SDR at $45k.

Promote that jr to an SDR and increase them 18% ($35k), company just scraped at least $10k off their bottom line.

I don't understand what this means. Like is it an intern or probationary role?

100% shit. We hired someone with that role and the person is doing more than 80% bdr role.

Counter thought:
I’ve seen in some companies the hierarchy is changing.

BDR’s are the ones that get meetings and pass it on to the AE’s
SDR’s get meetings and close it as well in SMB.

Also, I’ve seen SDR - Team Lead being a job under SDR Manager.

A jr. SDR may be a joke but it may be, entry level in that particular ORG.

It's a method to keep reps in seat for longer periods of time, pretend like they are advancing avoid promoting from SDR to AE
Associate SDR, SDR , Senior SDR, SDR team leader, BDR, Senior BDR, BDR team leader
^ See what I did there, I took 1 role and make it 7, enjoy your 3 years in seat.

I mean considering they’re paying SDRs absolute dog 💩 rn I’d 100% believe it’s a way to pay minimum wage.
