Just got laid off

I got laid off on Friday along with 3 other sales people.

I had an inexperienced manager come in (AE to CRO story)

he hired 4 people we didn’t need in his first 2 weeks of joining (who are all his personal buddies) and none of the team knew we were hiring, so no one interviewed them and they didn’t go through usual hiring evaluations.

then new CRO realizes oops we don’t have enough money, so lays off 4 people to make room for his buddies. He hired 2 AEs, 1 VP of marketing, 1 director of rev ops. Then fires 3 AEs, 1 whose an investor in the company, and 2 others who have been here for 5 months.

if this was for reduction in force don’t you think firing your 2 new AEs who aren’t ramped makes most sense? Why did no one else get “laid off” we have 2 VPs of marketing now because they didn’t let go of first one.

I managed the SDR team and from day 1 (I have an email) he made it known he thought SDRs were useless and now I’m outta there. Tho I hit my targets and grew the team.

anyways do I have grounds for anything here? I feel like this “lay off” of me and my colleagues is unjust and would like peoples opinion. Right now I’m thinking about getting a lawyer

There’s no law against poor decisions and bad management. Best you can do is leave a scathing Glassdoor review and move forward.

I’m surprised the CRO didn’t have to run all this past a board or the CEO/CFO. I doubt he made those decisions in a silo.

SDRs are useless, but I something they are a luxury since I strongly feel it’s up to the AE to fill their own funnel.

Good luck in your job search.

Most employment is "at will" and you may have no recourse here. It definitely sounds crazy, but many companies allow their new hires (the CRO) to make their own decisions about the team they want to lead. Honestly, since that exec thinks your team is useless, you were facing a total uphill battle to prove your worth.

I'm sorry it happened to you. Best of luck as you look for a new role.

You gotta have a license to drive. You don't need one to procreate or make shitty business decisions. Sorry to hear this. It's all too common. Best of luck. You'll land better off.

Sadly, your recourse options are rather limited.

I would instead route the resources you are thinking of spending on a lawyer, like your time and money, on revamping your CV, Cover letter (hello chatGPT), and aggressively pursue another job.

The labour market is not getting any better, it's in fact getting far worse with each passing week - something you can personally attest to.

Please let us know if we/I can help in any way. Good luck.

Sounds like a bunch of BS, sorry you went through that.

Although it doesn't sound like the company is going places under this guy.

Doesn't sound like you have much of a case of anything though.

Sounds like you were right in your previous posts and are better off now.

While this hurts and sucks right now, you’re going to come out ahead. What kind of role are you looking for?

If it's at will employment, you don't have much to stand on unfortunately, they did you a favor though, you would be miserable there when he thinks your job is pointless and doesn't appreciate your work.

Def doesn’t feel good but Looks like they did you a favour dog. Place sounds like an absolute fucking dumpster fire. Surely the CRO won’t be far behind you making decisions like that.

It sucks but I wouldn’t waste your time or money on a lawyer. You will find a better job anyways sounds like not the best company

I can see that the working environment became toxic enough when that person took those unreasonable decisions, that I totally believe it would get the sales numbers to the ground Asap.
I believe even if the layoff list was not including your name you should still leave, acting irrationally as done should make anyone thinks hundred times before considering to stay as it's very probable that he comes next.
Sorry for what happened and best of luck at your job search!
