Layoff Notice

Hey Fam,

Is a Layoff notice required by the employer?

As a friend of mine was laid off this month with no notice and once before I've been through a similar situation when my old company was downsizing and not only I got a one month notice but also an extra added cash equivalent to a one month salary and same for my colleagues by then.

Since it wasn't due to our performance and it appears to be the case with my friend but he still didn't get an answer from them regarding the compensation after being laid off yet and didn't get any notice at all !

So for you Fam, how your companies are handling the layoffs regarding the notice and the comps for the employees whom are laid off for whichever reason.

Feel Free to ping me with your relevant company's policy and that regard and the fair way you would think this situation could be handled the best!

Depends on the state, and the number of people/percentage of staff, laid off.

Is your friend in your country? If so, most of us won’t be able to help or provide advice, because we just won’t know.

Sorry it happened. It’s rough

Yeah he is, I know sadly it's the truth. But tell me about your company though, does it provide a notice for layoffs or not my friend?

Performance layoff? No. And we are too small to have mass layoffs.

Last company was large, and did do WARN layoffs a few times while I was there. You just don’t necessarily know who will be affected until the last minute.

Notice is nice but not necessary. In fact they probably just want you gone asap to prevent you from doing damage.

My company thankfully isn't in layoff mode. We are TRYING to hire but we make people go through so many stages that they take other offers before we can get them out.
I'm hoping leadership changes a few things.

totally depends on where you live.

Where I live, no notice is needed then can just let you go when ever, and for what ever reason.

Outside of adhering to any rules/regulations in local jurisdictions, companies don't and won't owe employees anything. Even kumbaya outfits like Google and Microsoft that talk all day about family, culture and mental wellbeing laid people off this round with zero notice. Google laid people off with an email to the personal inbox during the middle of the night.

I don't think they are required to give you notice or even a reason in some states. Not sure about your country.
The only reason companies do it, is to not have public backlash

Recently laid off, no notice.

Meeting invite at 10am for 2:30 pm meeting. CEO didn't even have the balls to address those being affected. Had his dad (COO) do it.

Pretty sure they're not required unless certain thresholds/state requirements are met.

I was given 4 weeks severance, but had about 75% of my target come in only a few days later, and after a week, would've hit my plan.
Sucks. Was sudden, as the VP threw a meeting on my calendar called "Sync" at 10:25 pm the night before. Showed up 16 minutes late, and the first person to join was the HR rep.

I've been laid off three times because I was a start up addict. Never once did I receive notice. I'd get a meeting on my calendar the morning of and walk into a room full of others who saw the writing on the wall.

Sucks! So sorryI got laid off without any notice either and def not due to performance (for sure)! 2 weeks for every 6 months of work and vacation time (even though we have unlimited policy, so they just paid off 4 weeks).Such as nature of the stupid SaaS , I guess.Good luck to your friend (and to me) to find the next step

If by notice you mean one minute, then yes. Always cry when being laid off. Make them feel bad.

I’m in Ny, and Ny is an “at will” employment state, meaning: you can be fired for any reason without notice and severance is not required.

Not sure about other states, but check state laws. Can normally google it pretty easily.

The majority of the companies don’t give great severance like the ones you are seeing from larger orgs. Also there’s not usually any notice. Layoffs are announced and then whoever’s impacted are notified same day usually
