I don’t believe that all top talent wants to work remotely. Some people don’t have a good living situation for a home office setup (single parent of young kids, roommates, small living space etc.) Some people just prefer keeping work and home life completely separate.

I think employers need to be flexible, especially with tenured employees who have proven they can be successful remotely. But I don’t blame a company for not wanting a fresh out of college SDR hire to work remotely yet. It’s not black and white.

Im thinking back on the beginning of my career and don’t think I’d be successful at all today if I was WFH for those first few years before moving into field sales. Feel like I wouldnt have learned nearly a well/quickly. It’s probably tough for new SDRs coming in as remote to grow as fast. But having been remote for years before pandemic I couldn’t imagine being forced back now, either

Yeah thats definetly true, I was in office for one month only before WFH and it was definetly a struggle to get going. I had to be very self-directed/motivated/and going above and beyond to do well.

Flexibility should be the goal. If your top people want to be fully remote? Awesome. If they want hybrid or fully in office? Give it to them.

I thought I wanted fully remote but I’m loving hybrid, especially since I’m at a startup.

You keep top talent by trusting your people and giving them the space to do their best work…If they’ve proven they can be trusted.

SDR/BDR - going to be difficult to show you can be trusted if it’s your first role. You either need to absolutely crush the interview or be talking with a company that’s already hired brand new sales people remotely.

Exactly. I think it puts the importance of remote onboarding super high. especially for brand new peeps. they have to work that much harder to make sure new talent isnt slipping thru the proverbial cracks. that being said if they are already savages, no reason to force them out of their shell. There is a balance here.

I think there's plenty of people who want to return to the office and have been craving the interpersonal relationships they've lost over the past 2 years.  We're seeing so many of these "make me go to the office and I'll quit" posts because, like politics and most other things these days, those on the far extremes of this argument are screaming the loudest about it.

"NO ONE WANTS TO GO BACK TO THE OFFICE!!!!"  You sure you don't just mean YOU don't want to go back?

ah yes, the proverbial screams of the self-indulgent out spoken baby children adults claiming they speak for the majority. I know i personally dont want to go back because a. love having my wife around, b. love eating her food, c. shes immuno compromised so no risking covid, d. I do my best work left alone

Flexibility is the answer. Dependent on their current life situation one or the other will better accommodate everyone. At this point no one should care for internal meetings if you're on Zoom or in the office. All that depends for us savages is how you perform.

To me it is not about one answer… wfh or office. Why are bosses trying to come up with one answer for everyone? They should focus on what brings the best results for every team member. If you are forcing someone to come back to the office who don’t want to and are performing well wfh, then I’m sorry but you’re a dumbass. Same goes for forcing someone to wfh if they want to come into the office - stupid. I believe the true problem is that the bosses are not focused on what is best for their employees, they are focused on what they want.

blanket statements never seem to really work......I agree with what @funcoupons says. you cant just assume everyone has a solid place to work from where they live.

I think its about flexibility and support.

if you tell your top talent what they HAVE to do instead of trying to support them to be their best (this really goes for every employee) then you are doing them a disservice.

Employers need to learn how to support hybrid work models and make sure that people that are in the office are not treated different than remote.

I love flexibility. If I find a cozy cafe or spot to work that has nice views to go occasionally that’s awesome. Sometimes you just want to stay home. Agreed, some people want to keep work/home separate and I totally get that. Sales can get crazy and lonely and frustrating so having some face to face time with colleagues can help; but only if they’re cool. I enjoy a good team atmosphere that can be maintained even in remote conditions. So it speaks volumes when a company has cultivated a great culture.

Went fully remote in 2012 and have not looked back.  However, it was a transition that involved training my family.  Just because I'm home doesn't mean all the housework and chores will get done while you're gone.  The Martha Stewart Fairy is not resident here, and cleaning up all day is not part of my job description.

I did enjoy being within commute (though an ugly commute) distance of the office - made it easy to head in for meetings, meet customers, raid the office supply cabinets...

Now I work for a company based on the other side of the country, have not met anybody with whom I work in person, and it's fine.   I do miss not having to deal with ordering my own office supplies, however.

No interest in returning to any office. Current company is requiring 2 days a week come summer. I’m out. If it wasn’t a requirement I might be inclined to stay around. Been in the sales game for 8 years, so I know what works for me and what I want.

I can see how you would want new reps to come to work together and learn. I see the value in making it required for certain leadership, training and new reps. But those with success and tenure, we should have earned a right to choose.

if "return to office" means giving employees the choice to return to office if they choose to, great! If it means forcing people who have been working successfully and productively from home for 2+ years to now come in, then its dumb for companies to force employees to do that. The past 2 years should have been an excellent case study into how well people are able to work remotely.

My company is talking about doing a hybrid model. Pick one to two days a week to come in to the office for a one on one with your manager, meet with teammates if you need to, etc. They have said they have no plans of ever returning to fully in office though. Just have an office there for people who prefer that environment.

Top Talent may have differing opinions based on lifestyle. You can have an individual who is so work-focused and oriented, that they may chase the sale, which might be better in some industries in the office vs. remote. The environment may be the limiting factor in that scenario. Alternatively, the individual may be good and at their role, and knowing their worth, are more inclined to leverage the work/life balance that is better suited to their personal needs. So, its a mixed bag. But taking a look at how you phrased your statement, it reads as if you are purely confident that top talent will always choose remote over in office? I just think there are too many personal variables involved to make that statement true.

Depends. For national and international sales where you are always traveling or going out of town every other week, the office makes little to no sense. For inside sales people and SDRs/BDRs, it makes a lot of sense to be in a pit to be able to work with others and higher ups.
When you go with other roles, it depends how collaborative you need to be. I feel bad for the junior people who are missing out on watching the experienced members of the team work and networking/building relationships.

Top talent is being lost for about 14 other reasons apart from where they start and end their day. WFH is a part of the equation but I wouldn't say the leader.

Poor leadership, job isn't fulfilling, lack of innovation, micro-management, SDE, no longer offering free Twinkies in the break room and downgrading coffee to some off-brand, etc.

I think it's important to qualify "hybrid". What I've seen is an office meant for 75-100 people has 7-10 people on any particular day. It's super quiet and very little energy. I've asked myself why am I driving all the way to an office for this?!

yeah, I don't think most of us want to do a full back-to-office model. Being given the option to work remotely is what I want really. I mean the office is in San Diego, CA, and I live in Medellin Colombia. So it kinda depends on the situation?
