I had a terrible and incompetent sales manager at my previous job.   I believe he was intimidated by me based on my sales experience and indusrty knowledge. I left that job at 135% of my target mid quarter.
I am now sales director for a company that white labels products for the previous job.   I need to get them to increase sales.   which would involve dealing with my old sales manager
best why to apporach him in a new role without the baggage from the past

Approach him the way you’d approach another person in the role. If you’re not awkward and are comfortable and confident yourself, you’ll be fine.

Basically, show no fear. You’ve gotten a promotion you earned to your former company’s loss.

So you are the director for this company that is not a parent of the other one?

I would just approach him like

Hey X! How's everything going?

Then continue on from there

Wanted to reach out to you about some potential business, etc.etc.

All you really can do?

Well if he was intimidated earlier, I assume it was because you reported to him. So what made the relationship poor won't be there.

Also you wont be dealing with him everyday, so I am sure if you are friendly and say good things about working under him, it will be fine.

Best way is to do your job to the best of your ability. If he has a difficult time dealing with you in your new role, let it be his problem, not yours. Anything else will make your job harder on you. Easier said than done, but you gotta do it.

Did you leave on good terms? Obviously, you left mid-quarter, but not sure what the baggage is other than the fact that you didn't like them

Yes, they also unilaterally told me they overpaid commission and deducted it off a paycheck without discussing it with me
They put the manager in the middle to handle it when it should have been an HR matter

oof. That is a hard situation for both you and also for the manager. That being said, business is business and I would reach out as normal, maybe a "how have you been" and then cut to the chase

I don't think that should be difficult. Approach with a clean intention and just ask what you want to ask. Do not bring in the past yourself. There's just no need.
Keep the conscience clear.

Well, if the old sales manager was intimidated by you before, he/she would not be happier now. HOWEVER, give a masterclass in leadership and humanity by approaching with the professionalism he/she didn't show you. Be assertive, firm but empathic.

I would reach out just normally without any apprehension in my mind. That’s step 1 and step 2 depends on the outcome.
