Mentality when changing roles

Sup savages, I am at a startup that is sinking faster than the Titanic and looking for a new role. I have made a criteria list and one of the items on it is base salary/OTE. Currently I am 80k base with 160k OTE. I want to go to a more established company with a product that truly works (can't say the same about what I have now). I have about 2 years of closing experience and most roles I have been talking to are around a 70-75k base salary. Is taking a decrease in base a bad idea, even if I am more likely to hit my targets and get commission?

If it's somewhere you believe you will actually close more, then aren't you going to make more?

Evaluate based on overall benefits. What’s their healthcare, or 401k etc. could even put quickly

I dunno. I just signed up for my company's 401k and I'm scared. I've never run that far before.

Would you wager $5k if you could turn it into $50k?

If yes, you know what you need to do.

do they make up the base in other ways? such as 401k matching? company car? better insurance? signing bonus? there is other ways a company could make up that difference.

Base is a guarantee, attainment is not. However, it sounds as though you're having to make a move, so a slight cut in pay may not be a huge deal if you're able to get out before you drown belowdeck.

Nothing wrong taking a salary hit if it (1) gets you a new job FAST, &/or (2) you use the new job as a paid job search to find your next real job.

For the most part start ups pay more, so it’s up to you

In my opinion if you are at the 75k range on base in the new company there's only 5k difference then what you are making now, divide that by 52 weeks in a year it amounts to less than a 100 bucks a week. You are a closer so I believe you are allowed to get coffee. So taking a small decrease in base and making the adjustment in commission will be doable for you.. Don't sweat the small stuff, you got this. All the best. 👍 👍

Think about it from a career perspective. I’ve taken pay cuts before because I wanted something stable after a fucky period, and used that as a launchpad to what I wanted to do. If it’ll get you closer to what you want, makes sense!

Depends on name recognition of the new gig, if it will help you make a major jump after, why not take a tiny hit?
