MJ vs. LBJ debate (in sales terms)

We all know the stats, and most of us would (hopefully) say Mike wins out. It's simple: Mike was the greatest scorer of all time while being top 2-3 ever in defense at the guard position as well.


However, let me put it in terms of selling....


MJ: Early sales hire at a company like Snowflake who built and operates a flawless sales process, probably selling in the Bay Area or NYC. Extremely thorough, expects perfection, and carries an exceptionally high close rate. Sold a great product for one company in his tenure. His teammates respect him more than they love him. VPs tell everyone to be like him.


LBJ: Quota crusher at multiple companies with both A+ and B- products. Helps coach teammates up beyond their perceived capabilities, like an RVP with an individual quota. Builds and operates whole company playbooks, not just the sales process. Close rate isn't as high, but crushed quota in a patch with less TAM. Has overachieved at companies that borderline shouldn't be in business, though he missed quota those years. Interviews the RVPs, not the other way around.


If I'm asked who the better rep is in this selling scenario...I'm pausing a bit longer on who wins.

If Sales is a meritocracy and we all have the same expectation to produce, why is the so much talk about pay equity/inequality in sales? Shouldn't the meritocracy part be an equalizer?
