Need Advice - Best companies to start in sales

Hey everyone! I'm currently a recruiter looking to transition into sales and wanted your thoughts. In the last year I've been at my company, I've done a lot of cold outreach but have not been able to score any new clients. This sounds terrible, but it's the truth. I think this is due, in part, to the fact that my much of my time goes to sourcing candidates for my roles but also, I don't feel I was properly trained at my current company.

I really want to develop my sales skills and so im deciding to become an SDR. What companies would be best to start my career in sales? Also, any other input is appreciated. Thanks!

Any company that is willing to hire is a good place to start. Repvue and Glassdoor can be your friends

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
This is exactly what I was thinking - whichever will hire you.

That said, IMO the bigger the name of the company the better youโ€™ll be in a couple years. A marquee name will always be good for the resume and is more likely to have a good SDR training program.

To piggy back here, many bigger companies have academies or programs for sales that are designed to take a new rep through sales training from start to finish. Training can be very comprehensive and set you up well.

I wouldn't recommend joining a company just because they'll hire you. Even as an SDR in today's job climate. But do your due diligence.

Take time, research companies, utilize the hundreds of resources to vet companies and what they're hiring. LinkedIn, Repvue, Glassdoor, all can provide some insight. Message people in SDR roles at the companies you find interest in.
Go through the tech sales U program.

Good luck!

In this market/economic climate, any company with a good rep on RepVue/Glassdoor. Try to stay away from toxic boiler rooms.

Mid-enterprise level orgs where they have a training and solid onboarding program in place so you can learn and get your feet wet for 18-24 months.

Previously, I would have said SFDC, MSFT, Zoom etc, but now... doesn't matter. Just go somewhere where you can get hired.

No specific company names to give you, but some advice:

There are fundamentally two ways to get started that I've seen be successful - Both require adopting the mindset of an apprentice learning a new trade from the ground up.

Option 1: Join a startup that's been alive for a year or two and is looking to go thru a round of sales expansion. DO NOT BE THE FIRST SALES PERSON OR BDR. Join something that has a handful of folks already so there is at least some respect and understanding of the role.

Option 1 is the 'drinking thru a firehose' learning method. This is what I did. It's a very fast way to level up in sales, but it requires a ton of individual vigilance.

Option 2: Get into a Big Corporate sales team, similarly from the bottom. They will put you thru all kinds of training, etc... which can be tremendously helpful. Progression up the ranks may be slower than Option 1, but the name on your resume will resonate into the future.

It all depends on where you can get a foot in the door as others have said.

MAKE SURE you do your due diligence to ensure you're joining a real business that solves problems you actually find interesting, not just getting 'a job'.

I connect with ransoms on LinkedIn when they have a job opening. I try and have a coffee chat with them so I can definitely get into the first round

Lean into your recruitment experience and target companies in the HR/TA space. It will give you an advantage in connecting with prospects and understanding their pains to set meetings. Recruiting might be down now, but there are companies hiring and will bounce back post these round of layoffs.

Double tapping on the others. Def go to a company that has some type of training in place that has worked for them though.

Seriously though, I know a lot of people that started there, and now theyโ€™re top-performers at other companiesโ€ฆ.

The grind is real, but if you succeed there, anything else is a piece of cake.

Just sayinโ€™.
