Need advice on my next move

Oh well, I just got laid off. I was already looking to leave by the end of summer because this was not a good place for me, so I'm not too sad. I just didn't expect to be out of work before getting my new job, but hey that's life.

Now, I'm debating whether to take the summer to travel and look for a new job in August/Sept. Or should I start looking now?

I'm still early in my career (24 yrs old, 2 years as a BDR and 6 months as AE), so I'm thinking that taking a couple of months off won't affect me in finding a new opportunity but I have no idea. What do you think?

Edit: Sorry, I should have mentioned financially; I'm good. I've saved a lot of money and could be out of a job for 10 months and be fine. My only worry is will it look bad that I took off 3-4 months to travel instead of going back into the grind?

My answer depends totally on how financially comfortable you are right now.

Take the summer to travel and to reflect on why you were laid off. You can even mention that in interviews as a step to improving yourself

As long as money is no issue, take that summer off and regroup. These opportunities don't happen everyday!

I didn't think i'd find a job as quickly as I did after getting laid off. I made summer plans a week after getting laid off and my current employer knows it's in my contract.

If you can afford it, do the live, laugh, love thing or book your travel now and apply for jobs anyway with the intent of letting them know further into the rounds that you have plans should they make an offer.

Either way, take it easy on yourself. While I'm happy to be working again, my mental health and ability to deal with all these layoffs has made me weary of a lot of the shit going on.

If you're on severance by all mean chill and relax but just make sure you return BEFORE your severance runs out.

As someone who's been laid off, sevvy runs out quick and it sucks burning your savings to be a degen. Gluck!

As long as you have a safety net. It may take 3-4 months to find a job after you get back from traveling.

it really depends on how difficult you think it might be to get a job 3-4 months from now versus right now. If you feel confident about landing something at the end of the summer - go travel a bit.

Pretty much a unanimous call here. If you can go- go. You’ve got many more years of work in front of you. Likely, you’ll make many sacrifices for work as your career progresses. Go. Enjoy.

Good move! Honestly, sounds like going on a nice break and then rolling up your sleeves for the job hunt is the best play. You never know when you'll be able to take a significant break again.

Do you have any ideas where you want to go?

I had already planned to work remotely for a month in Europe, so I might just stay longer in Europe or go to Asia. I've been wanting to go to Asia for the past few years, but with the time difference it was impossible to work from there so nooow it might be my time to go.

Because you are financially in a great spot, the recommendation would be to live the best summer of your life. I see you are in NY. I’m not sure the hobbies you are into or what you do for fun but you could be a regular at spots like Long Beach NY, Rockaway Beach, travel out to Montauk whenever you want to and also do some gig work like bartending if you want. You can also be applying to roles and interviewing while the whole debt ceiling fiasco is figured out and companies always seem to be hiring at the end of august/beginning of September. I’d go for it if I were in your shoes.

Thanks!! I really like Long Beach, never been to the others but I’m always down to discover new places. I’ve actually always wanted to try bartending haha maybe that’s my time to try it! Yeah from the people I talked to, they all said they would be looking to hire August/Sept so that’s why I was like let me just enjoy my summer and then come back around that time.

Look at it from others perspective .

Most sales managers grinded for the last 10 years. Money was good, lifestyle went up and now they have big houses and expensive cars.
Many of them envy the ones who traveled and experienced the world. They wanted to do that , but guess what…money was good. Now they’re trapped by it. (I’m not saying it’s wrong. I want it too but I don’t need it NOW)

Doing something for yourself is so counter intuitive. You feel guilty about it but others are jealous that you are doing you. Covid is the best example. iCs worked remotely from Hawaii. Managers were stuck and wished they could.

I career changed , traveled and did everything against the grain. It made me way more interesting as a recruit and as a recruiter.

Plus if someone judges you for traveling and doing something close to your heart , do you want to work for him/her?

In youth , you spend your health chasing wealth. In old age you spend your wealth chasing health. Is that the way you’d like to live?

If you can afford it, go travel. Best thing you could ever do for yourself.

Don't be too worried about a gap or anything. You can literally write in your resume about travelling. Talk to people about some classes you took to stay up-skilled. If you can close em now, you can close em later.

For context I’m 30 and have spent most of my career in sales - every day you’re not selling you are losing your edge. This is a SKILL, and if you don’t practice that skill it’s going to be harder to get back into. You have some good experience, but most companies would still look at your resume as someone who they’d hire as a BDR. I’ve hired a bunch of AE’s, I know that based on what you’ve said I wouldn’t be sure if you’re ready for an AE role. If you decide to take the summer off I think it would hurt your chances of getting another job as an AE. Idk how much, and maybe it’s just my own bias, but I think you probably recognize the risk in that as well. I personally don’t take risks unless it’s an investment, so I know what I’d do in your situation.

Just my two cents, sounds like you have a bright future ahead of you either way. Best of luck!!

Start plopping applications in, a 2 month delay = 4 months with a typical job interview interval in the 2 month ballpark. Once you get the offer, you can indicate you’re unavailable for a period of time. You’ll be bored by day 17 of an endless vacation

Travel now while you can. Also, I’d network along the way. You can make connections as your travel and you would be surprised how many doors that opens. Worst case scenario you have some awesome stories to tell in your interviews after.
