negotiating severance?

I just got laid off from my company i've been with for 3 1/2 years. Privately held start up... They offered me 1 week severance and payout of my accrued PTO. How do I go about negotiating for more? What should I be targeting?

I mean .... ask for 4 weeks which is standard, but they have the upper hand
Sorry to hear about this

in our handbook it says they do not pay out PTO so should I just take it as that will be 2 full weeks on top? Could they decide to pull the current offer if I do ask for more?

No telling what might happen. If you're comfortable asking, you might ask anyway. Even in CA, an employer does not have to pay out PTO, so I expect they're thinking this gives you that three weeks severance, or 1 week per each full year worked.
So sorry.

Good to know 4 weeks is standard. I'd definitely try to negotiate.

At this point you’re not in any position to ask for more. You have no leverage. Basically you lost the leverage the day you started. Call it a learned lesson.

It's not self promotion, it's literally a link to how to negotiate severance.

I’m interested to hear the results of this, but I would think it’s more ‘take it or leave it’ I doubt they would even entertain negotiation, but I could be wrong…

THis is always strange to me. Severance is legally locked in in Belgium

it depends on how long you've been an employee. It starts at 4 weeks and after about 2 years its 13 weeks. After that it's more or less one extra week per year.

I saw someone post in a thread a few months back about negotiating for severance in your employment contract which kind of blew my mind, but given the climate today it seems like a solid idea.

You have no leverage. They will not give you any more. You can ask because you have nothing to lose, but be prepared for a no.
