Severance

hi all, anyone made or making a switch?
I have been encouraged that due to the current tech landscape, many are successfully adding 12mth minimum severance packages, included base, commission and stock.

any luck? how long? how much? role dependent?

Never have thought of negotiating severance at the point of offer. Feel like that’s probably the smart thing to do, but it’s seems like bad juju

I've never seen severance offers until they're about to cut you

Have never heard of severance packages offered when you sign up. Sounds ominous.

It's a protection. If in the first few months, or well within the year they adjust or new leader is brought in, Bad fit, pay me to leave.

I just hadn't heard of it. When you say you've been encouraged to do it, and that "many are successfully adding it" - who's encouraging you, and who's adding it? It kind of sounds a bit like hearsay (the old "everybody knows" trope) but I'm intrigued to look into it a little more.

I am fielding two offers and had had them add it to both.
I was encouraged to add this from others in this space who have made the move in the last 6 months as a result of the turbulence in this space.
Two recruiter colleagues gave me the guidance they are using and have used in CSuite for some time, which is now moving and being confirmed in Vp,Director, AE levels….

it is a trend…

If you are trusting they will deliver and your success is supported, they also have to acknowledge they themselves change direction, leadership, or business softens, and they need flexilbity, it just should not come at the expense of you just landing, leaving something else, and starting your search again….

Thanks for the insight.

Which space?

I understand "golden parachutes" for execs - was not aware they were even in the cards for AEs. Interesting.

It’s probably role dependent. I’ve never been laid off so I’m not actually sure of the process. I didn’t even know it could be negotiated

If a company included severance info in my offer that would be a hell of an emotional roller coaster for me…

I think some context. Without it, especially in the US, they can cut, adjust, fire, whatever without so much of a noticed period. I'm in Canada. And out of the box because our Canadian Employeement policies, all are entitled to a minimum of 3 weeks, or 2weeks for every year of service. This might be a very CDn specific conversation, but it is happening, and 6nonths as a minimum for high functional sellers or VPs is the starting point. Again, US, capitalism and labor laws down south might make this a non starter.

They may be what large orgs are offering…however, I know startups that have just been kicking employees to the curb.

Execs can negotiate severance but it depends. Highly fluctuates due to company and position.

I now negotiate a severance package and minimum first-year earnings, but not 12 months of severance. I feel that is asking to be looked over.

They key to negotiating severance is to be in a good role and you set it up as protection for leaving that tenured position.
