I think that the bias towards athletes in the recruiting process is fascinating. You have a bunch of has-beens trying to recruit the latest crop of former athletes so we can all share the same stories year after year.

I played D1 lacrosse, but I can't say that I've used it as a bias for recruiting in the past. In fact, I think I've only hired or managed 2 former collegiate lacrosse players in my career.

I agree yet also disagree with this. The bias to hire former athletes is real but I think it's based on the assumption that a sports background automatically means you have a track record of being a team player and having a good work ethic. I think the relatability factor is also real but definitely takes a backseat to those.

I get why folks think that...but there are a lot of little shits who think they're untouchable because they stuck out 4 years in a protected (and unpaid) bubble as NCAA athletes--especially at the D1 level. Just my take, though.

No sports here, and really sick of hearing about how valuable a background in athletics is. "They know how to be coached" "Sports= undeniable competitive spirit" "blah blah blah"ย

I'm not athletic, I've never played sports, and I have always been a top rep. I also think that this mindset is an easy way to eliminate female candidates for roles, probably unconsciously, without having to come to terms with what you're actually doing.ย

What do you mean by sports background?ย  Like playing in a serious team of some discipline or just being heavily into sports?ย  If the latter then yes, i have a sports background but i was never part of a team for anything due to the sports i pursued.ย ย

I was going to ask about this too. A lot of people may have played sports in middle school or even high school, but not sure if you are referring to people playing at a higher level like college or semi-pro.ย

No sports and no interest. I honestly blank out when people start that whole "Did you see X play last night" or "Do you like sportsball?"

The best I can reply with is "I like playing it more than watching, and I don't play".

I think that used to be the case but not nearly as common now. It's not a bad idea to recruit athletes though because you have a good idea that the competitiveness is there and not everyone has that.

Why not? I'm assuming it wouldn't be one of the major players though, it would have to be a cheaper niche one
