Non-cringe Podcast / Content Idea

hey everyone,

not to hop on the podcast content creator bandwagon but I've had an idea for a while that Ive wanted to try out.

my big problem with sales LinkedIn podcasters / content creators is that they all recycle the same shit I've seen a million times and there's just a lack of originality. every single one also talks about "do this and be the a top 1% AE with 1M w-2" and most of it is usually BS.

I wanted to do something kind of like humans of New York but for sales where it's feel good content with just normal sales people. not content that makes you feel like shit just because you don't think they way they do.

I will talk about REAL issues that NORMAL people in our profession face and just fun random shit too. also maybe like a sales mythbusters where we take viral content and actually test it in the field to see if it works or not.

for example I see a lot of people are obsessed
with the perfect "discovery" or "sales process" but I never see people talk about stuff like "how to use your personality like a super power" or "how to manage stress during a tough quarter" or "if you are this type of seller - follow this content"

tell me if this sounds like a bunch of bullshit or if you all would actually tune in.

Who are you going to interview? Real sales people or “personalities” that already pollute the media space? If the latter, I’d likely ignore with the rest of the shitcasts.

Real sellers. Starting with just people I know that are awesome

I like that way more than the idea of another sales influencer showing up to puke all over me with fake enthusiasm and recycled viewpoints.

Yeah and I feel like my intentions for creating it are pure. I’m not doing it to sell people my bullshit course or buy an ebook. I just want to contribute to the community in a positive way. When people see my stuff it makes them feel good and happy.

Reminds me of a LinkedIn post I saw earlier of someone calling out a "sales trainer." 👀🍿

It would be interesting to hear from "real" sales people, but to be honest, "how to use your personality like a super power" sounds exactly like all those cringe-inducing podcasts already out there. If you're going to interview real people, I'd encourage real titles. YMMV.

Appreciate you willing to ask for opinions! Makes me more interested in listening to the podcasts once you get them done.

i really like the idea.

the hard part is figuring out WHO will listen and why.
all those other podcasts have ppl lisening becuase of the GUESTS they have. not really because of the hosts and their view points. (well at least at the start maybe its different now)
If you are going to do it, I would focus on sharing your unique perspective and have that communicated so ppl want to tune in for YOU.and if you have guests on, thats awesome but if you rely on guests to get viewers then you will run into the problem that @poweredbycaffeinementioned.

I agree 100%. My viewpoint is more like: “I’ve been around the block for a while and I get it. Our profession is fucking difficult and I’m tired of people pretending like it’s not. Also people are always talking about being the top 1% - but where’s all the love for the rest of the 99%? What are some of the real normal things we struggle with and the common ground we all share?”

I think the average metric for when a podcast starts to garner listener growth is like... 60 episodes?? So you're basically talking into the void for a while unless you have an existing network of folks who are willing to listen.
I'd be interested in this format though. Would even be interested in being a guest if you ever decide to do it!

You should pick a handful of industries/titles and interview them to learn about their day to day. My biggest challenge as a seller isn't solved by the typical LI influencer recycled content, but keeping up to date with the typical roles/responsibilities of the personas I sell to.

Good luck! However you frame it, make sure theres value for other sales people.
Being a parent, my free time is limited to binge podcasts. I'm getting to a point of strictly reading and listening to stuff that's outside the business world.

Keep us posted and keep coming for feedback.

I mean not a bad idea to do something similar to Humans of New York. I'd say try it out, the worst that can happen is that it will flop which most podcasts do, but at least you tried it.

I want to hear about the sales shit shows...not wins, or at least seriously fucked up compromised wins that really define the grit of a salesperson.

Totally agree with you, this way you're targeting more closely the challenges that they're actually facing on a daily basis, instead of just stating words or setting directions that are far away from what they actually need and won't help em grow, so go 4 it bud, I'm with you!

I was literally just talking to my buddy the other day and asked him "have you found any sales (CPG) podcasts that aren't super dry" he also said everyone he has found he gave up after like 2 shows because they are dull and unrealistic. I think the people in sales that benefit from podcasts are looking for realistic relatable content that is more day-to-day problems, successes and still be interesting. Corporate Bro is getting close with his comic relief approach. Need to have someone who compliments other salespeople that has no experience whatsoever in sales.
