Personal Branding

Happy Holidays all,

As I head into 2023 and we begin the planning process, I have been looking at what, of the many skills I need to improve, will likely be the most important and, as the topic suggests my personal brand is abysmal.

Has anyone here taking steps to improve there brand over 2022.

What did that process look like.

Did you follow a step by step course

Trial and error

This is one thing that I struggle with heavily because of the "why would anyone listen to a sales guy" thought. My products have always been around healthcare and tech and quite frankly not fun to me so talking to others about it never seemed frutiful

Just would love to hear what others have seen work/reccomend.

Thanks!

soooo i think you need to think about WHY you want to build a "brand".

like some sales people talk about HOW they work on linked in because they want ppl to see them and go "oh i like how he works i want him/her to work with us"

others want to be known as a voice in the industry they work.

others want to teach others sales ppl how to get better.....and thats a pretty crowded space hahah

yea id rather not be the person who teaches
I havent built anything yet so my cred is zero
thats the problem with every space

that said, being known in the industry is most important
network=networth sort of thing

Posting on LinkedIn with no audience isn't likely to build your "brand" (a nebulous term to begin with).

If you want to build credibility actively participate in communities where your audience congregates. That may be online, in person, etc.

Posting into a void won't do much. Meeting from your industry and talking about what they're working on will get you further.

this is such good advice. if you want to do this on linked in, and easy way to go about it, is to be engaging in the comments of ppl who have a following.

if you are making LEGIT contributions ppl will notice.

if you want a process to follow, i would talk to /follow Justin Welsh. he knows exactly what he is doing.

I think you can build a great network without trying to build some personal brand. Your network should know *you,* not your content.

yes! i agree, 2 ways i have tried to do this:

1. at conferences or in person events, trying to connect with other sales ppl. get to know them, if im trying to advance my sales career in that industry.
- this has led to job offers,
- new friends
- me helping others find job
- mentee relationships.

2. Connect on linked in
trying to find ppl that have a point of view i connect with, or have done things i think are cool. and then trying to connect virtually to form a relationship.

both of these combined is the way to go in this environment i think.

There is a great story that I remember n one of Russell Brunson's books. (Expert Secrets I think) He talked about Frank Abignale from Catch Me If You Can. Abignale taught Sociology at a university level for a semester with no prior training. When asked how he did it, he said he simply stayed on chapter ahead of the students.

You do not need to be a full blown expert. You just need to be one chapter ahead of someone else.

Instead of blindly posting to LI, try digging into some of the groups. I have had some success there.

But as a sales person, I have found the best "branding" is just being successful.

If you're not happy where you are at or don't believe in what you're selling, that's one thing. But being a successful sales person is a "personal brand" of its own.

Do you think the successful sales person as a personal brand, helps with client. As in you are confident so it makes a better meeting?

Building a personal brand has become kinda catch-all advice. Everyone tells you to do it, but few people tell you how.

Personally, I am a big fan of personal branding, but not many people do it well.

My suggestion is to look up the JK5 Method. IT is where you find 5 topics that are very important to both you and your ideal client. For me, it is Sales, Marketing, Emotional Intelligence, Introversion, and Humor. I cycle through those 5 things, and all of my posts align with at least one of those 5. This keeps your message consistent and helps people who like your content stay engaged.

Next, really nail down your ideal reader/follower profile. Know them like you invisible best friend. Anytime you write a post, write to them as if you are sending an email to that person. It makes it seem so much more relatable.

Anything else, I am happy to help.

Likewise, be sure to comment and comment A LOT. I have grown from 0 to about 8,500 followers this year. For each post you do, leave 25 GOOD comments on other people's posts. If you do 25 comments per day your brand will grow pretty quick and you will meet some amazing people.

These cannot be one or two word comments. Build on their point or ask a relevant question in the comments.

I think the biggest mistake is trying to go very broad. Stay with your expertise and try to add value to conversations.
