PiPs

I was put in a 1 month pip at work.

I started in a new vertical within the company beginning of February. The vertical is small with limited accounts to go after. One other rep to compare me against. Other rep warned me about taking this role as they felt it a second rep was unnecessary and not enough to feed two reps.
Average deal cycle is 8 months.

AE/AM role (never been AM but inherited 10+ active clients that demand a ton of time and existing business doesn't retire quota)
I met quota first quarter because closed up previous fired reps deals in progress.
second quarter I missed quota.

I've been working my ass off prospecting generating tons of pipeline since the start, learning new vertical/industry, learning new software, working 12+ hour days, zero time off all summer.

Now in 3rd quarter I'm on PiP to close X deals which it attainable and I will meet but they're also saying I need to improve my product knowledge and sales skills. Pretty Vague.

I told my manager I was shocked and wondered why it hadn't come up before. Manager said I should have known.

I told my manager I have never seen someone come off PiP and stay with the company and it's usually a way out the door. My manager said that is not their intention and it's to improve x,y, and z so I come out better. I'm really bummed out about it because I'm a big fan of the software but also feel as though this place is killing me now.

What to do?

Polish up your resume. Your manager is checking the HR boxes to fire you.

What size of company is this?

did you get forced to sign anything with the PIP? when you get let go after a PIP you lose some of your benefits i.e. unemployment as you're fired for "cause" - you could have tried to negotiate a severance package.

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
Of course its "not their intention..." it never is. But it really is. He just wants to squeeze every last bit of juice from you before discarding you.

This is a paid job search. Sure, put in your time but don't go to super-human efforts here. Even if you hit your number, you're most likely gone.

And it sounds like you're ready to leave anyway.

I mean, I just got PIP'd with the same generic excuses along with I need to hit 'x' number by eom or I'll be seeing the door. I'm ok with that since I saw the writing on the wall from the start.
I'd start applying elsewhere asap and focus your energy on that. It seems you really tried your best, but just remember it's not a reflection of your skills. Shit rough out there for everyone.

With a no notice PIP, I would dust off the resume.

Best of luck to you. Sounds like you're a good rep in a bad spot.
Curious as to why you took the role when you were warned it would be difficult.

Other vertical I was in had no record of proven success. Brand new vertical and nobody had closed a deal in it besides me. And the deal I did close ended up churning after 1 year. When the opportunity opened in the other vertical I felt it couldn’t be worse then what I was already in.

Ah, that makes sense. Sounds like the whole org is a disaster, tbh.
