Reaching out after a final interview for an internal position ?

I am currently working as an SDR. I've done well and now I'm looking to become an AE at the same company.

I've made it through the final interview stages and am essentially to the point where I will either get a job offer or rejection.

There are a lot of moving pieces as it is a new department that they're building out from scratch and it has led to this being a longer process. They had to hire another manager and she ended up having to push her start date which delayed the hiring for AEs. Again, a lot of moving parts. Seems like a great opportunity and great people, however, all the delays in the process has been frustrating.

At one point I was told by one of the hiring managers, "I have your back. I won't forget you, just be patient." however that was almost 7 weeks ago. She has said many things implying that she wants to offer me a position but this whole process has been over 3 months.

I was told last week that I should hear back any day now but they've been saying that for a while. Should I stay patient or should I demand answers from them ?

Thanks in advance.

How would you demand an answer? Give me the job or I... what?
Keep your head down. If they haven't hired anyone for the role that's the reason they haven't hired you.

I think you answered your own question - lots of moving parts, schedules being pushed, etc. I'd be patient another couple weeks and then casually approach management and ask "how are things going?" and "I just wanted to reiterate my interest in the position..."

Additionally, let's say you don't get the role.
Set up 10-15 minutes with the hiring manager to understand what you could focus on to be in a better position for when the next opportunity opens.

When it's internal like this I think you just need to be patient.
You can't really force anything, and it might hurt your chances.

Stay patient and look for other roles outside of the company on the down low.

I'm sure it's very frustrating, but as you mentioned, there's a lot going on to hold things up. As oldcloser said, though, you don't really have a graceful way to demand anything (I'm paraphrasing). Pachacuti has a good approach to getting some answers, and Rambo has a great suggestion for follow up, should it be necessary.
In sales, you're also going to run into delays very much like this one, but where you also will have some leverage and control over the process and cycle when it comes to meeting timelines and signature dates. Unfortunately, in your case for this process, you don't have any leverage, so you'll have to practice some patience.

There's no way you can demand answers from them. When its external, it's still a safe bet to demand answers. But internally, you don't want to mess relations up if you want to stay there peacefully.
There could be multiple reasons, and maybe none of them are personal to you, as to why they are delaying and not following through their promises.
Wait for a week more or so, and ask the hiring manager to give you feedback on what might have gone south ( double edged sword this is).
