Remote job for office Job??

Currently working for a company making 60k plus 60k OTE, the company culture is great, I currently work from home. I haven't made much in commission this year since the company is working on getting the products off the ground. I've enjoyed the flexibility of working from home and traveling whenever I want, I think the products were launching will have potential down the road.

I just got an offer making 85k plus 40k OTE, the company seems to be well organized with plenty of perks. The only downside is that I have to go back into the office 3 times a week and wear a mask. (Not sure how I'll make cold calls where a mask but that's not the issue.)

Do I leave my current role for a job that's paying 25k more but isn't remote?

Trust me, you can make the calls--but you kind of sound like the teacher from Charlie Brown (if you're too young for that, go google it).

You're not being paid $25K more, though, right? If you are hitting your OTE you'll only make $5k more in the end, and in fact, those commission checks will feel and look smaller.

Are you getting better benefits? Retirement programs? Free food? Travel reimbursement/parking? The advantages of going in-office are slim, but they have to highlight them if they want you to join. Oh, and a beer tap or ping pong is not a perk.

Does the other company have a good product? Don't get caught up on base salary. You mentioned you haven't sold much at your current gig. Are people at the perspective new gig closing?

I concur, this is something you should REALLY vet hard when considering a move.

The other company has a great product. It seems like people are closing more at the new role.

How far is the commute? that plays a big role into it. Personally, if it wasn't far I'd totally be down for 3 days in office for a big pay raise.

Currently living with my parents but plan on moving closer to DC. It’s about a 40/50 minute commute.

That's a lot of your personal time spent in the car, not to mention expense.   You could spend that time listening to audiobooks or podcasts or learning a language while commuting, or you can factor that time back into the appeal of remote work.

As others have said, you have to take into consideration the time and expense of the commute in addition to the rest of the equation, which is the % of reps hitting target, the long term prospects of the company, etc.

Agree that's a lot of time spent on commuting. I would only switch if they had a lot of other perks or benefits as well.

I thought about this some more, and realized that, as a young employee way back when, I definitely benefitted from being in an office work environment.    I think that may need to be taken into the equation.

You have to ask yourself, how important is being at home for you?
If you’re okay with 3 days in the office, go for the 25k pay increase.
But, if staying at home allows you to spend more time with family/ partner and saves you money on travel, then is that worth it to you?
I’d personally turn down the increase to stay at home with my wife, plus the extra 2 hours a day I save commuting and all the coffees, lunches and other unnecessary expenses that come with office life.

It depends. What is working from home worth to you?

It’s all your preference. If you are currently at a new company (they are new) you may make more down the road, and get promoted faster. In my experience more established companies drag on doing increases. The longer you are there the less they are willing to bump pay.

You sound young, and being in the office can be fun. You burn a lot more money though.

Personally, I would never go work in an office 3 days a week again. Also would never wear a mask all day. It doesn’t makes sense in an office where you are going to breathe each other’s air mask or not by the end of the day and would be annoying.

This is a tough one. How long is your commute? (It may cancel out any increase in $.) Are you planning to stay in your current location? (Remote means the freedom to move if you want without having to find a new job.) And as many others have mentioned, is the new opportunity one where the sales reps are closing? (If yes, then may be worth it compared to your current gig.)

WFH is the new perk - if you're closing why does it matter where you are?

I think you'll have to look into a lot of factors when making your decision. Like how far is the commute? What is that going to cost you (gas, tolls, vehicle maintenance, parking, etc.)? How important is working from home to you?

I've had these same thoughts with my current role. I'm remote right now & make a very average amount. However the flexibility I have & team dynamic isn't something I've found anywhere else so I wouldn't necessarily want to trade that unless I was going to be making a ton more. In this case, $25k is a pretty big chunk IMO

I'd stay at your current company. Personally I find workplaces that require mask idiotic. The science proves their not effective. I also value remote work. Your peace of mind and being comfortable is worth more.
