SDR with no commission๐Ÿคจ

Saw a job ad today for a founding SDR position at a tech startup...with no commission.

Curious as to who would take that role, and if so, why??

EDIT: base salary is $40k + standard benefits (biggest perk is 100% remote)

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
A number of reasons - foot in the door, its better than flipping burgers &/or ditch digging, love for the tech, start-up risk/reward oppt, etc.

If you're a recent college grad it could be very appealing, if you can afford to talk a lower paying job for a while.

Interesting point. I guess for getting your foot in the door itโ€™s not all bad, canโ€™t say I wouldnโ€™t be bummed about no bonus though :/

I can't imagine being fresh out of college and taking a job where there's bound to be little or no training or support.

Edit the post and include base/benefits.

Context matters. If itโ€™s really $40k, theyโ€™re going to have a hard time filling that.

I'm there right now. I don't have a commission, but my base is almost double that amount. A good base and no commission are okay as long as the base is good. $40k is a slap in the face for a FT position.

I would think a high base salary would make it feasible for most

SDR is arguably one of the โ€œharderโ€ roles imo, seems crazy to me to offer such a low base with no bonus

Depends on the base pay and organization you'd be joining. Could be extremely beneficial.

Curious, how would it be beneficial if there are no bonuses? I assume youโ€™re talking about fast career progression?

Obviously foregoing bonus $, there needs to be other serious incentives to consider a base pay only role.

In a previous role I was in, I worked as an SDR for a startup Biotech software company. It was a shitshow. But a friend of mine I had made through networking mentioned that he was working at a more established company operating in the same vertical. They had only a higher base, no commission.

The benefits were obvious; better mental health, far less stress, better coaching, etc. Really depends on the organization though, and its tough to get a full grasp of what it can be through interviews.

Hope this helps.

I get ya! Didnโ€™t think about the longer term career benefits and overall mental health in sales

It's tough; the whole point of sales is to make dough, so if you take away a major chunk of that, it better be justified.

Jesus. That is low pay for an SDR anyway. Then you also have no incentive to perform

I assume itโ€™s targeted at new reps but founding SDR role would be quite difficult for a new rep

unless you are getting a measurable piece of the company, $40k is almost nothing by today's standards.

People who generally may take that role are either want a job so badly for having no alternative or just have it as a side hustle especially for students in gap year!

With that base and no commission, it would most likely be a stopgap for someone between true paying gigs.

All of that sucks, 100% remote is not a perk as an sdr.
