Selling yourself in an interview

we're often told to sell ourselves in an interview but what does that really mean?
It's probably not the time to be too humble when meeting a hiring manager but what do interviewers look for outside of talking through your track record of success and hitting targets?

Many hiring managers wouldn’t be aware of this but they want to see a reflection of themselves in you.

Just think about it: Won’t they hire themselves for this position in a heartbeat, if it was possible?

Very true. HM's often think they are the perfect mold for their company.

In short, think about the impression you're making. You are selling yourself the way you'd sell a product. Why you, why now? Be confident, know your strengths and speak to them, be prepared in that you've done research onto the job and the company. Present yourself as the solution to their job opening.

FYI: You might want to fix your post title.

One thing is “do I want to work and be around this person 8-10 hours per day for the next 1 to X number of years?” It’s not often talked about but it’s definitely a hiring factor.

It covers a lot of things apart from your sales journey. Example some companies want people to have the values they believe in - why - may be those cannot be taught but everything else can be.

Displaying how you are a close match to all the factors they are looking at will put you on top.

For me it’s the little things that set you apart, smiling, eye contact, firm handshake, being prepared and doing company research, ask questions and engage with those doing the interview. These items in total can make a huge impression.

Yes, set yourself apart with positive factors such as the eye contact and firm handshake. I was told many moons ago to sit near the edge of the chair as this almost automatically helps with the posture. Good sitting posture helps one stay engaged and focused on the interview panel. Getting back to the firm handshake mentioned by@HVACexpert, IMO that is of upmost importance! Nothing makes me cringe more than shaking hands with a two pound walleye.

Shaking hands with a limp dead hand is awful and I immediately judge that person.

While I agree these things can a go long way and you can’t underestimate the power of a firm handshake and good posture - these interviews are all on zoom. I find eye contact, standing and dressing up help big time though

Maybe have a deck with a few prepared and polished slides that you can share. Hiring managers will eat up things like a SWOT analysis, 3/6/12/24 month business plans, etc.

That means to focus on a good elaboration of your skills and experiences you have in sales, so that if you were hired the company would benefit from them the most, same as if you are selling an actual product.

NB: It's Internet not Interview on subject✋

Reframing it as how theyd benefit if they hire you helps. Thanks!

Tell a story and try to convey the things you did and can do for them once they hire you

they're hiring for one of two reasons 1. they have a problem someone needs to fix 2. they want to grow and you're the ticket

you're the only product that can solve 1 or 2, so make sure they buy YOU and not your competitor (some loser somewhere)

Approach every interview as a Discovery meeting. They have a problem and you are trying to determine if you can solve it and do you want to?
