Should I stay or should I go?

Hi everyone. I need advice. Rambling commences below.

I am currently a Solution Sales Rep at a large tech company and am unhappy. I joined the company as part of an acquisition about 8 months ago. I was at that smaller company for 5 years prior to the aquisition and was a full on Enterpirse Account Rep. I consistently hit quota and was the company's highest performing sales rep for three years straight.

In this new role I've been working with the same product just with less reponsibilty (I play more of a supporting role versus taking the full lead on opportunities). I work on both Enterpirse and Mid-market accounts. I'm hitting my quota but I am bored out of my mind and ready to move to something new and more challenging. While my comission package is competivie, the chance to close bigger deals is smaller and I'm on track to make less money than last year.

About 2-months ago I was asked to apply internally for an Enterprise Account Role in a hot territory. They ultimately decided to go with someone else who has been in the company longer, but the manager of this team has assured me I am next up when/ if a position at that level becomes available. My plan was just to stay at my current position and look for a new position at a different company. If the opportunity to become ab Enterprise Role came up again before then I'd maybe take that. I've been low key applying for other jobs here and there but my downgraded title (and the market?) isn't yielding me much. I was on track for one job but they decided to hold off hiring last minute.

Fast forward to today. A colleague is offering me a Midmarket/ Inside Account Rep position on his team. He is telling that this will be transition step to move up to an Enteprise Role and learn the company's other product and services. However, it feels like another downgrade from the Enterpise Level Role I had before the acquisition. I'm also concerned about finding a Enterprise level job at a different company if my title is downgraded to inside Rep.

Should I stick around and wait for the Enterprise Role? Should I take the Inside Rep role and hopefully do well enough to get me a promotion internally quickly? Should I seek a new sales role somewhere else? Or wait until the market improves and until I have a more impressive title?

Wait for the job you really want. Once you get serious about applying for roles you'll start to get more interviews.

Seems like you would like the Enterprise Role more than not happy with your current role. I wouldn’t leave the current company unless it’s for an Enterprise AE role in that case. The colleagues Inside Rep role could take even longer to get promoted in compared to your current company since you are next up.

On the resume/interviews show the track record of hitting quota and emphasize you sold enterprise and you should be getting offers at that level.

Definitely sounds like you want ENT, so go for that. Don't settle and find yourself in the same situation just in a different place.

I would wait it out. if you already have reservations about the other company/position, then it's for a good reason

Don’t just jump ship to jump ship. Talk to the enterprise team and manager and clearly tell them you want this. Remind them regularly (build up some pressure). Look around for similar enterprise jobs and only jump if it’s a really good fit.

Your gut feeling is accurate, if you want another vote to stay until you find a role you want, when you really start looking.

Absolutely do NOT step into the ISR/mid-market role. Objectively that would be a step back and confuse anyone not at your current company.

perhaps the best advice I’ve ever been given WRT this is “don’t run from something, wait until you have something you’re really excited to run TOWARDS “
