Small software vs large comapny

I have worked for large companies the past ten years and have been in software sales
for the last 3.

no matter where I've worked there's always awkward situations with commission structure, territory, losing deals or percentage of deals
to corporate BS. I'm also not a fan of monthly quota and buy now vs later scare tactics.

just curious what it's like on the other side with smaller orgs?

is there such thing as

No such things as “the grass being greener” elsewhere. We all have corporate BS to deal with.

One company I was at had a 50 page comp plan. It was ridiculous. Another company went from 1 page to 8 pages just before going public.

Never negotiate on OTE. Negotiate on base salary and other items.

Unfortunately, you're always going to have to fight to make sure you're getting paid what you're owed/deserve. Consider it part of the profession. Organizations basically expect their sales people to try to "sell" (negotiate) internally to maximize earnings.

There's typically more visibility at a smaller company, so often there's even more scrutiny.

IMPHO, there is a more significant risk of changing compensation, territories, etc., at small companies.
In larger companies, making those kinds of changes will take a plethora of ad-hoc committee meetings and approval from everybody and their brother before the change hits the front line.
In smaller companies, if the CEO wakes up one day and wants to make those changes, it's done by sunset that day.
