Teach me how to negotiate to get the best job offer

Yesterday Zoominfo gave me an offer to be an Sdr for them. The whole process took a day - that was cool but what was not cool was the comp. Way too low (50/90k plus 50k worth of shares redeemable in 2 years).

I grew up a bit last year and got a house/mortgage so.. 3k a month won’t cut it anymore but I still wish to have a fruitful career and set myself up at a solid company.

My comp is 80/100k rn and I am interviewing for Senior Sdr /junior AE positions. I have 3 years Sdr experience at 3 companies - a recruiting platform, application security and a data analytics Platform.

I know it’s a bit jumpy but I’ve learned a ton from each org and thankful for my career so far. This next move seems like a make it or break it for me - I hope to stay there for 3 years minimum.

Thank you!

Why aren't you applying for AE roles?

I am but some Sdr roles are also enticing. Do you know of any good companies I should apply to for AE roles?

Well are you an AE or BDR now? Looks like you're a BDR? And you're making 80k base plus 20k in commission?

If that's the case, your base is extremely high for a BDR. You're not going to beat that anywhere as a BDR, or frankly even as an entry level AE. Most entry level SaaS AE's start at around a 60k + 60k plan

And that's kind of what keeps me locked in as an SDR - the money.. There are places that will match my SDR rate - if I can find the right one and be promoted I won't have to take a paycut.

You're probably one of highest earners in terms of BDRs here. Frankly, with over three years experience, you should be looking at AE roles.

It's better to understand the compensation at the start. I'd ask and if I find low, I would share my expectations and if it makes sense to discuss further unless I'm desperate for a job. Try to nail AE so you can earn more!

Amen brother, thank you for the sound advice. Ae now is probably better than trying for internal promotion again - if I want to progress already

Firstly, you should be going for AE roles. Shoot higher @Softwhiteunderbelly

Secondly, the way you will have negotiation power at the end of the interview process is by blowing the actual interview out of the water in the first place. Focus on that part, and the rest will fall into place.

80 base for an SDR/BDR is solid money lol. I'm not sure your industry and where you live but the only way you'll make more is being an AE at this point.
I would say pass on an SDR opportunity.

Agreed.   I would expect maybe a shift in comp to a lower base and 50/50 OTE - $60K/$60K was mentioned, and that sounded about right.  Could be a bit of a leap, but worth it to get set on a good path.
