SDR here. Put in my notice today. Leaving my job making 45k base / 65k with OTE to 63k base /90k with OTE. Same job - Enterprise SaaS but different industry. 40% bump in pay.

Congrats Sam! Can I ask how you did it? I’m debating on leaving my current company but afraid that I don’t have enough experience. I have been an SDR for 7 months all with current company. Was your old company a start up (seed or series A) or more established company (series C and higher)? And was your reason for leaving money motivated mostly? What kind of SDR enablement does new company have that old didn’t? Management style?

Yeah great question! Wasn’t really looking to leave my current company but got hit up by an internal recruiter at this new company. Researched on Glassdoor a bit because I recognized the name. Took the initial call because the base salary I saw on glassdoor was way higher than my current salary. He confirmed everything and I started the process. Love my current company. Great culture and everything but I have a wife who stays home with our little one so I couldn’t say no to a 40% increase in pay.

Yup I did. My old company was solid, but they brought in some horrendously incompetent leadership who actually were in an active lawsuit for fraudulent forecasting to the street at their old company, which caused their old companies revenue to tank by hundreds of thousands.

Why did they hire them? Who fucking knows, but a MASSIVE amount of the reps and senior leadership all left within a few months.

The new leadership changed rules and processes to be very authoritarian and very cumbersome, so we all took advantage of the hiring market and left.

The big change is to go from 100% time invest to 70% time invest in a full-time job.

Side Hustles are very well accepted out there.  Side Hustles don't have to be found by any Management Teams.  Do it under an Alias, if they find out no big deal.

It's time to double down there.

I think everyone in SaaS Sales needs a Marketing (Internet Marketing) side hustle.

It's so easy to build a little side biz as an Affiliate Marketing, SaaS Side Hustler.

The good news is if you do this right, you will be able to learn marketing as well as your marketing team and call them out on topics they try to challenge you on.

Best Side Hustles today are 4 buckets...

Drop Ship
eCommerce
Content Sales (sell pdfs and guides, exclusive content, courses)
Micro-SaaS (take features and functions and slice them off)

These businesses take a little bit of time to build but can be amazingly profitable and they can get you that extra little income you needed to be successful and buy that new home, ring, etc..

But never jump in too early, they will hurt you if you do.

Takes time, but can develop.  Starts with an audience.

Find a niche.   Learn to build Websites.  Stay away from LinkedIn Influencers who promote their personal brand and offer weird pay sites.

Wordpress, Shopify, Webflow, Other Technologies like this...

Learn NoCode (Airtable)

It's a lot easier than you think.  I've been using a lot of No Code or Github Copied code.  They put it in there for you to find and resell.  The other move is building White Label SaaS.

My roster of contracted employees has been a revolving door the last few months. I haven't missed quota as it's based on new placements/revenue but I've had next to 0 net growth since April as everyone's looking for greener pastures. Good on them but not ideal for myself.

Not higher management, I'm actually a recruiter that also does business dev. Business dev is fine right now but it's not my main role or where I make most of my money.

Basically, I'm actively closing deals but not reaping any rewards from them. Essentially treading water. A fair amount of my coworkers have actually seen their books of business shrink as much as 30-40%.

I went from making 65k OTE as a BDR at a shitty company to making 60k base/90k OTE at a great startup. IF YOU ARE IN A SHITTY SITUATION, LEAVE! There is no better time to leave than now!

Just got my first offer, I have been applying for all of about 2 weeks. I am in the process at a few other places as well.

currently an sdr with 42k base, 65ote no path for promotion due to it being an outsourced firm.

Offer is for 65k base, 10k capped commision at a start up. Path for AE is there also. Equity given if commision goals exceeded.

Not going to take it right away, want to wait for the other offers to come in.

If you are even thinking about a new job, DO IT. It was super easy to get this far.

i dont think this is the case. if The Man can get a computer to do a humans job, they'll fire that human. once you decide to leave employment, you're just accelerating the rush towards the future.

i think we're more likely to see more suffering from idiots not thinking through their misperceived power right now than employers losing control.

I’ve been thinking this the whole time with the pandemic and work from home, especially the ops roles in large ISO9001 companies. If I can successfully get you to do it remotely, when you move on or I decide the business needs to be more profitable, guess where that job is going. I may get pushback on that opinion but before anyone does, really think about that.

I did. Was at my previous company for about 6 years and needed a change. I took a six figure pay cut but am still happy with my decision (when not looking at my bank statement of course haha).

Curious why you did this? I assume you are somewhat money motivated being in sales and thats a big haircut to take.

More upside in your current role? Would love to see how you thought about this decision.

Well, I went from a director in the #2 globally in HR services to VP in the #1 company which was a factor. Also, I'm bringing a new and industry changing service offering to a market with massive opportunity. So one step back, two steps forward.

Graduated last May and got a job as a BDR at a startup (45K base - 55K OTE). As my first job out of college I didn’t know any better, but I was given no training, no guidance, just a quota. Spent 10 months having no idea what I was doing everyday and didn’t realize the tole it took on me mentally. I started to question if I belonged in Sales. After prospecting a deal where our technologies implementation caused an entire team to be laid off, I opened my LinkedIn to recruiters and found my current job. SDR at a bigger company, 58K Base 75K OTE, with amazing opportunity for growth, a supportive team and leadership. Have ranked #1 on my SDR team since I started and am fast tracked for promotion. Realizing I was in control of my own career and breaking the stigma of needing to stay at a job multiple years was the best thing I ever did. 10/10 recommend opening your LI to recruiters at the very least

No bullshit it was kind of mind blowing. They offered an equity package (I was employee 12) that was 3000 shares that they also later tried to drop to 1500. Really a bummer too because they raised a massive series A and are up to 80 employees already. Had they been honest with me it could’ve been a much different situation

I’ve been through a couple of this upward swings, and I can tell you that the grass is usually not greener on the other side. A bigger base and OTE can look great until your target is ridiculous, or your manager sucks. There is more to long term success then small base salary jumps in a hot market

Laid off from one of the Big 3 US logistics companies. Got my severance payout. Already had a job lined up before my official termination date.  The original employer was stunned that I wouldn't take a demotion.  Fuck out of here with that noise.  Now I'm making close to 60% more in the SaaS.

Now I can set my own quotas and processes instead of having to deal with micromanagement/managerial incompetence. It's great!

Yes! Walked away from a VP offer when I realised that I’d have to perpetuate the same inequality to my direct reports. (They were offering me 50k less for the same position to bring in more revenue than white men 20 years older than me) Got 2 offers for slightly different industries/products while on a 1 week vacation and signed one for 100k more comp, and better work life balance. The Great Resignation has taught me that shitty leadership doesn’t deserve blind following, they should be tested for the values that they espouse at town halls. Feels good to be in a position where we can make career choices based on our values, the lives we want for ourselves and corporate culture we want to partake in.
