The long standing debate of personality types in sales!

I've been in 2 companies so far - decent tenured stints. I'm also looking out for my 3rd company now. That said, a couple of things I really want to put it out here based on whatever I have observed so far:

  • "Sales folks are generally competitive with others and only those kinds survive" is a myth that was churned out by people who were ruthlessly competitive. It holds no water. I have seen really amazing sales people who compete with others and survive, and I have seen truly incredible sales people compete with their own past selves and survive. The personality type that is not competitive need not have any complex. The personality that is competitive with others need not have any guilt either.

  • I read somewhere that the personality type that's calmer, softer and more nurturing in nature tend to become amazing Customer Success folks and the ones who are more of hunting in personality type tend to be more successful in active selling. I call it bullshit to an extent, not to the T. Sales require far more nurturing skills in this generation than I anticipated. Neither type is wrong, both can be just as successful as the other.

  • Environment matters more than your personality. The environment that you are working in reflects on how you'd be performing in that company, irrespective of what your personality trait(s) are. It also has the capability to change your personality trait when it comes to sales and how you perceive it. It also has the power to trickle down to other parts of your life too.

I believe working in sales you should be competitive and a bit risk averse.

Yes, the calmer people can be great salespeople. They can ALSO be great CS.

The environment can kill your good traits or enforce them. SO yes it really important. That's why you should vet your employer before joining.

Another myth is introvert and extrovert in sales and that extroverts are better suited for it. 'm introvert and know a lot of introverts in sales and we seem to do well too

Bullet #1 - Mostly true or generally true. Definitely stereotypically true.Bullet #2 - Way less true. Grind takes many different forms.Bullet #3 - Absolutely true. Environment matters.
Opinion, for what its worth.

Totally agreed on everything here.

I’m maybe one company/1 or 2 years ahead of you in work experience. I’ve noticed a lot of these same things. Especially on number 3, environment has such a massive effect.
