The Next Stop?

I have a lot of conversations with displaced AE’s about what they should consider as the next area of focus for their software sales career - after the sting of this lay off goes away.

I’d like to pose this question to the Sales Savages here. Besides anything with “Generative AI” in the title (or explain why that hype is real).

What advice would you give to a displaced AE who is competent at their craft, but looking for the next thing?

Tech sales isn't going anywhere it will bounce back but it will take time, question becomes how long can they wait based on financials and all.

Completely agree tech sales will be back. More wondering what area of tech sales should be a hot focus for the next 3-5 years.

They should be willing to do whatever it takes.
Consider looking for other jobs. Consider other industries. Consider somewhat lower positions. Consider smaller companies. No space to be picky about it.

Look for recent funding in your space, based around PLG, usually means smaller and more stable sales teams.

Is the competition doing better? More stable? Not laying people off? Often that lateral move is a good one. AE is coming in with a good foundation, and a bit of a chip on the shoulder doesn't hurt either.

Given the mass of recently laid off talent, are recruiters helpful or should sales people sell themselves - you know - the old fashioned way.

VC funding is a good signal for “hot” areas. It can dry up quick though (ie crypto) so still want to research past quota attainment / territory / etc even in hot area
