Thoughts on boss gifts?

This ks my first Christmas at this company and I'm learning that it's customary to buy gifts for the entire leadership team plus each reps dedicated support person. This works out to be 5 people!

I've always chipped in on a gift for a direct supervisor and I like using it as an opportunity to say thanks. However 5 people feels like a bit much.

What is your experience here?

ETA: Asking because I don't want to come off like a buzzkill but I also don't want to spend $100 on people that definitely get paid more than me.

That's bullshit. Sounds like a tradition started by a huge ass kisser that is most definitely a part of leadership now as a result of the permanent shit stain on their nose.

I got my CEO and COO a nice gift back in September as a thank you for hiring my brother that came out to about 500 all in on both. That being said, I've never gotten anyone in leadership any kind of gift because, to your point, they definitely get paid more than I do.

Maybe they are asking for that amount so they can get a gift card.

Do not get leadership a gift.

If there is to be gift giving, it should be the leadership buying gifts for the reps. Any gift for a
dedicated support person should be up to the individual rep.

The worst. I recently got asked to chip in for a present for my bosses birthday ON MY BIRTHDAY which of course my boss doesn’t even acknowledge. Foooook that.

Support person, I'm all for that.

But leadership? That's awkward. Why? And why isn't the "leadership" team stepping in to quash this?

Been there. It sucks! Especially when you're either the only one or one of the only few who decide to not chip in.

You're looked down upon by everyone else with eyes screaming "HOW PETTY!".

I used to pay in such cases. And then either run uphill or bathe thrice that day, to feel less contaminated.

In my view my boss works for me. He’s supposed to insulate me from all the corp bs and dumb asks that get dropped on our plate… so I’m gonna get me something nice. Maybe a trip to the mountains.

Having said that if I was to give him something (besides a cut of all my deals that he had 0 influence in) and based on his performance insulating me from corporate bs, he gets a giant 🔥 bag of 💩!

$20 per person? or $20 total? if it's per person, then f that. Then again, I don't know what all your company's leadership does for you.

Per person. Yeah I kinda think that’s what a paycheck is for… I should be rewarding you for doing a job that you’re supposed to do while you also make more money than me. Ya know?

If anything, the leadership should be getting the team gifts or even a holiday party. Secret Santa/White Elephant could also be a great option.

For your support person, I can absolutely see that and think that is great. For leadership, unless they do something above and beyond, it’s encouraging ego trips.

Yeah, no. Leadership should be buying gifts for underlings and everyone else can chip in on gifts for their immediate manager.

I have never, and will never (even if asked) buy a higher up a gift. Unless they do me a huge solid. To your point, they get paid more than me. Maybe I'll buy them a beer or something to say thanks, but that's about it.

We get our direct boss something as a team. That's it. He buys us a lunch so it works out. It is a sign of appreciation for all the shit he does to protect us from his bosses.

If I were asked to buy for the entire management team that literally plots way to not pay me EVERY DAY. Not gonna happen.

We don’t have this in our system. I don’t mind chipping in if the person adds real value to me.

If there is a local chocolatier, that's always good. Or if they have a "thing" for a local college, etc. Or just $20 to starbucks. Really depends on what your boss means to you personally.

If you’re an IC on a team, each contribute a few bucks for a team gift to the boss. I never get my boss anything just from me. That’d be weird. Every boss I’ve had has giving each of their reps an individual gift. Seems customary. However my extended team- especially my SE, is always treated well during the holidays if it’s been an alright year.

Eww! I wouldn't like it for sure! It shouldn't be customary, what even !
I am absolutely against any sort of gifting in workplace, to be honest. It somehow unconsciously creates biases and judgments that we can do without. So.

gifts are about thought
if you feel like giving one then give
if they fire you because of it they will have the pleasure of gifting you a fat lawsuit check
