Today, I ate a big bag of turds. Self-imposed. Force fed.

February 1 was day 61 for me in the new seat. Plan fully done, top to bottom. 80+ pages of outbound sales motion creation that says, "We're gonna do it like this." Miro boards, marketing pieces, collateral, contracts, handoff pieces, every last bit of it, from scratch. C-suite players approved. Board pitch scheduled. First two sellers and 1 BDR due to land on that day.

3 weeks prior, I'm wrapping up the BDR and seller #1 when CEO/Founder says, "I'd like you to meet this dude. He was here for just 2 months a few years ago. I didn't have time to train him. But having seen your structure, I think he'll thrive in your process. Great guy. Tried to build his own CRM to keep organized when we had nothing. Meet him. I forwarded his resume. Now, don't get me wrong. It's your department, your team, you gotta like him. But do me the favor and meet him."

What I heard is not what he said. I heard, "I've got your second seller. Quit looking. You've got momentum. Let me make this easy for you. Hire this guy. Do it, bitch" So, basically dude had a seat before I meet him. I half interview him, he seems fine. Boss wants him. Been here. Gets it. Easy plug n play. Done. He's hired. Easy from here, right?

A week before his start date he asks if I could give him a $500 stipend to rent a small office because his house wasn't large enough to have a workspace. What the fuck have I done. ย Next, he's getting his computer. Person who sends them calls me. Says, dude wants a backpack.ย  A backpack? Is he going fucking hiking? I ask him why he wants a backpack? Says, "I always get those. You know with a logo on it. Also, while I have you, do you process corporate credit cards or is that an HR function?" Now I know I'm fucked. I run back to boss and tell him we're pulling the plug. Cancel offer. Kill it. Nope... we're gonna give him some time to get acclimated.

The fucking story ends exactly as you think. He never books a demo, or hits his shitty little month 1 KPIs, against no quota. Feb 28 he gets the KPI or quit note. Feb 29 he hits it. I'm pissed. But today he didn't even scare it. Terminated at EOD and was completely shocked.

"Why? Are you serious? What are you looking at? I did all that! Look at Hubspot! It's all in there. Are you kidding me?"

No, you didn't. Good luck to you. Done. The only remaining question is who is the fucking moron that hired this piece of shit in the first place? Of course it was me. I owned the whole thing. because I can't blame the boss when he clearly said it was my call... right? RIGHT! Now, i know it wasn't my call. He knows it wasn't my call. But that's not the point at all.

The only possible takeaway from this is that sometimes you just gotta eat a big bag of shit to keep peace. So we smile, swallow and waive as we parade into March. My pipe covered. it's like nothing ever happened.

Have a great weekend y'all. Don't TL;DR me. You've got nothing else to do.

The backpack / credit card demand on the back of a $500 monthly offer stipend is wild.

Will you question the bossโ€™ call next time? Or find some way to skate around it?

that seems like a get outta jail free card on the next โ€œfavorโ€.

Next time I get to do whatever I want. Just gotta be careful to listen to every word of the next ask, and wait for him to to complete his sentence before I quickly deny any request he may have, no matter what it is. Interrupting a superior can be perceived as disrespectful, you know.

I was completely shocked that he was completely shocked he was let go. In my wildest imagination I can't see a possibility of continued employment if I'm working 9 minutes a day. He made one call, left voicemail and sent 8 email templates.

In the end someone could interview great, come in with great metrics from other companies, and in the end totally suck. Sometimes you just donโ€™t know, and when your boss basically vouches for the guy , what can you do? Glad you nipped it in the ass now before he got too entrenched.

I could have gone the principled route- the one where I put him through 6 interviews, and ultimately tell the boss I donโ€™t think heโ€™s a fit, but f itโ€™s really important to him, Iโ€™ll give it a try. That way if he fails itโ€™s the bossโ€™ responsibility.

Who the fuck am I kidding. My fault no matter what. If the guy worked out, boss gets credit. Unfair? Who cares?! Thereโ€™s always something. Shit like this used cost me sleep.

Never worked for a small company (well we were 140). Is a backpack not the norm? Figured youโ€™d want the asset protected. Luv the story tho closer! Definitely resonates with some of my experiences!

No backpack for this one. A hard hat would have been more appropriate. The funny thing- last time I worked for a company big enough to have a backpack budget out of the gate - we were in office. Our Compaqs, HPs and Dells sat right on top of the desk

Bummer that he didnโ€™t work out. I probably would have given him a second month but the writing was on the wall obviously.

A workspace isnโ€™t too big a deal but the backpack and CC was over the top.

I donโ€™t think he had one of his own. Trade show expense report was all cash. I was gonna bring him to a pitch in MN. He lived in WI. Quick flight- good training value. He wanted to drive 6 hours. I wasnโ€™t having it, because he charged us .67 cents/mile for his 4 mile trip to the airport the first time. Seriously, a $2.68 expense item.

While he was 100% entitled to the reimbursement - who does that? And no- he didnโ€™t get a card.

The data never lies.
I went from a sales engagement platform as an SE to a company using it, and I was helping them with implementation and how to set up the sequences. While doing so, I was surfing through the data and noticed that two of the BDRs were faking the call numbers by dialing and hanging up immediately. None of them ever connected - but it looked like 100 calls were placed that day or whatever bs number was key.
Yyyyyeahhh, I kinda sorta got them let go. Sorry, dudes - grind doesn't include baloney.

Well they really sucked at that. Everyone knows you call the cell. Wait all the way through the recorded OB message, the beep, and the recording time. This way you get the dial and the talk time. Will they ever learn?

There was a touch of friction for a month as I was documenting. Getting the buy in to fire him took that long. Nobody likes to be that wrong- and as a life rule, I never use โ€œI told you soโ€ So, when the evidence became objectively overwhelming, it was organic.
