Torn Between Selling and more Data Focused Role

Senior at a Large Big 10 school in the Midwest (still distraught about the Gopher/Badger by the way lol). I have spent the past 3 years interning as an account manager (2 years at a staffing firm + one year at a large tech company. Enjoy sales and have an account management role at a shop I like and can see myself growing at (Being broad on purpose don't want to dox myself). Where the problem is that as I am moving closer and closer to graduation I have discovered that I really am passionate about strategy, business analytics (primarily customer, marketing, and sales analytics) and data visualization (I like to make visualizations on world data on my free time).

So now I am at a dilemma: I love speaking with clients, I love the "customer first mentality" and have been hooked about the idea of OTE and Quota (I create value, and I get rewarded for that value directly) but I also love the mental stimulation of those interests above. In an ideal world, I could do the selling as well as visualize how this solution could benefit a certain company. (I just don't think this role exists other than going into Management Consulting, which I have no interest in because of the limited exposure to the selling cycle).

With this in mind, I hope to move into Sales Management to at least get a flavor of these interests above as well as an additional factor of me enjoying being a teacher. Is there some roles/industries that you think I should look at that may scratch that itch? What about some mid/late level career roles I could pivot into?

(TLDR: Account Manager looking for a way to stay involved business analytics/visualization)

Not sure why it’s a binary choice. Machine learning and predictive analytics will eclipse business intelligence solutions (fight me). You take those data skills along with a drive for sales results, you are bright red meat for the ML world. I think you can do both.

I appreciate the speedy response! I would love a little bit more of a deep dive on the ML space, as I have been struggling to find reliable information?

It’s highly out of fashion due to the chat bot hype. And please don’t confuse machine learning with any sort of chatbot. Search around in obvious places. Go to the IBM site and read about Watson. Then slide into the neural nets. Read up on how computer networks are designed to emulate a human brain. You might just geek all the way out.

There are roles out there. All the big tech companies with martech have divisions that focus on analytics, data, etc. there are definitely roles out there for this.

It's not my chosen field, but I think if you look into DMP or similar, you may find at least adjacent to what you're looking for.

I’d say find sales role at large company. Good chance you can move into sales enablement and a role that involves business analytics.

Would this still have a high level of performance pay? My reluctance to step into that role was I thought it was considered more of an "operations" role.

No. Sales Enablement does not have performance based pay.
