VP’s stuck in the past

Work in an industry that is getting a ton of investment right now and fast evolving. The company I am with is the biggest provider and has a long track record of success. Some hot shit up and coming companies doing some cool stuff.

I have noticed that some of the sales leaders at my org are not evolving and using sales strategy from long ago. The advice is stale and strategy is played out.

Is it unrealistic to expect senior sales leaders to be on the cutting edge?

I think it really depends on the company, but in my experience most VPs seem to have forgotten what it means to be an AE. Not that they aren't sympathetic but more so, as you stated, they rely on outdated tactics and things of that nature. Again just my experience

There’s definitely been a problem with just promoting high performers into management without a second thought and lots of them get lazy and just give the same old recycled “advice”. It takes good leaders to truly push for change and it can be painful - stick to your guns and ignore the ones that are opposed to change.

I've been dealing with this quite a bit and it's really helped for me to balance both older tactics as well as new ones. When I "prove" that new ones work, people tend to listen, even those that are very resistant to change. Keep on trucking, friend! @SQL

They will adapt to whatever upper management strategy that gets implemented.
If no push from the top down then they will remain stale.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
Yep, and if upper management decides to go even older school, the managers will do that as well.

Stage a coup and replace the leaders with fresh new blood. I'm not expensive, but I'm not cheap.

Some are too far above the fray to know anything. Others are actively trying to progress things. Should be an interesting 2022.

The "if it ain't broke don't fix it" crowd can be dangerous, suggest exploring or implementing some newer strategies or tactics that your competition is seeing success with and go from there.

Good call. Been working that angle a bit over the past few months. Also been engaging with marketing to get them to do some of the dirty work. They seem eager to get involved.

Solid advice. Trying to keep my head down and try some new things. When new stuff works and there is tangible data, I roll out to the broader AE team.
