VP to IC and I report to a dumdum

The title is pretty self-explanatory, but a bit more detail:

  • Laid off twice in 2023
  • Took a job as an AE at a consulting firm, selling services to sales and operations leaders. Needed a paycheck and I wanted to transition into consulting eventually.
  • I took this job because I was a former customer, and I trusted the person I THOUGHT was my manager.
  • On day 1 I found out that I would be reporting to the newly promoted sales lead, who was previously the only rep on the team, and therefore the "top rep at the company".
  • Oh, and within 3 weeks I found out we are having cash flow issues despite being told they were in a solid position during the interviews.

Turns out that this person does not know how to manage. They spend the entirety of our 1:1s doing deal reviews (which we do during our daily standups AND our weekly forecasting call). When I give feedback that I'd like to spend part of it on coaching I am told that I can ask other people on the team for that...but no one else on the team is getting coached either.

The absolute worst part of all is that he really thinks he is a sales visionary. He like to use the phrase "time kills deals" and "we have to hear no multiple times before we believe it". He treats me like I am a brand new rep with no experience, and when I teach him or others something that he didn't know he gets high and mighty that "this isn't the forum for a sales lesson".

Bottom line: how the fuck should I deal with the transition from leader to sheep when my new Sheppard is a fucking dodo brain?

Yeesh, sounds like the new director our company hired. Has zero industry experience and is clueless about what we do or how to help us. All we get are constant "update your SFDC dashboard to the new one I created today" or "if it's not in SFDC it didn't happen." Um, obviously that is incorrect Mr. Man but thanks for playing.

I have no advice - only commiseration.

Been there man. If the ceo is pushing it off then I’d look elsewhere if you can. Fish rots from the head down and that tells me the culture isn’t going to change anytime soon.

Best advice is jump ship and let them know in your exit interview (if you have one).

This feels like the right move, but I’m so sick of the job hunt after two forced ones in 2023. Maybe it’s time to give PBC the CEO title.

I have no great answers here. It sucks to be in this position. Have you tried to talk to the person that brought you into the org?

It's so hard to deal with poor leadership when you know what good leadership is.
Since the CEO punted, I have no idea what to tell you. Close your business, work hard, and keep those feelers out.
Sorry.

Seriously, use this time as a paid job search and find something else. It sounds awful and you sound unhappy. I doubt anything is going to change.

When looking you now know you need to know who you're going to report to. If I showed up at a place that just did a switcheroo on me in terms of who I was reporting to I might have walked out.

Have you had a chat with the guy that brought you over? That seems like a sandtrap and idk if I would be able to stand it.

So here is what you do then. Go to whatprank.com and order this. Have it sent to the office in their name. Really important that you get the signature required add on.

Even if they don’t work in the office, the fallout will occur.

Sit back. Shut up. Sell some deals and avoid the pile of shit manager. Pretty simple. They don’t value your feedback so stop talking in group settings and anything beyond formalities.

Then just go with the flow. Maybe crack a few jokes about them being a ‘sales pro’ and just still keep a bit more to yourself. Do not act like friends with them and see what happens. Also talk with person that brought you onboard and tell them true feelings about what’s going on. Ask their feedback.

Sounds like your company sucks. If you plan on sticking around, then just do your own thing and let your results process themself. Also, CYA. Make notes of every interaction or misdirection, with timestamps and screenshots when he ultimately take the credit for your success.

Have a log of everything that worked versus the diarrhea he’s spewing.

Then, take his job.

If luck was a person. I always said I’d rather be lucky than good in sales.

You have to manage up here. He is going to think he’s hot shit no matter what, you just have to eat shit and pass him things that are your ideas to get them implemented.

The only other option is to let him fail/hope he fails without being forced out first. That’s a risky game.

The fact your CEO isn’t addressing…that feels like the biggest red flag of all.

Hate this for you PBC.

I’d maybe take another stab with ceo just to see if it shakes the tree.

Can we help keep an eye out for potential opps? I know you don’t wanna hop again but it feels like you’re on a burning boat.

Sorry to hear this that's a brutal situation.
Others have echoed this but as much as it sucks to jump back into looking for a job that could be one of the better options while trying to close some deals.
