Was on the receiving end of a bad cold call

Was going about my morning today (smiling and dialing) and was on the receiving end of a cold call. I don't get too many as I'm not a DM but always pick up to see how others run a CC as I sometimes learn some valuable angles.

Bit of context - the person was calling from a sales enablement company and started off by asking which tools we are currently using. I found this good as they were building out their research and I gave up that info as it's nothing secretive.

After that is when it starts to get bad. The rep went on to go on a 2-3 minute pitch of their company's tools. Keep in mind, this is post me telling him I'm not DM. He started listing integrations of tools that are not even employed at my org, and he knew this after the first minute of the call.

The best part came at the end (the worst) - not even bothering to ask who the DMs in my org are, he proceeded to tell me (not ask) to give our VP of Sales a pitch of what they do. Essentially, he wanted me to do his SDR work for him, without even getting buy in from me.

Calls like these make me feel super confident against my competition. After a brief LinkedIn view, he’s been at the company quite some time. Blows my mind.

The average rep is reading off a script written by someone who was a below average rep 10 years ago that somehow snagged a manager position.

It doesn't take much to be an above-average rep in these situations.

Sometimes, I continue talking to these reps to see how far will they go, you know?

Definitely hate scripted calls. No conversations and just “hello my name is xyz from abc, trying to sell pqr”

I've done this a few times. It's like a morbid curiosity

Nothing like sitting through a derailed call like that to reassure you that most people suck at sales.

I do the same thing, I either let the sales guys calling me to have a minute to see if I can learn an angle or let them know up front that I am not interested, relate that I am in sales too, and wish them luck.

If they have been there a while seems like they adopted the, throw mud at the wall and see what sticks.... or perhaps they were in multiple positions and ended up moving into sales recently.

My old manager used to say ‘throwing mud at the wall is one thing, but throwing shit rarely sticks’ and it’s always stuck w me

Woof that sounds rough, has to be reading directly off a script right?

That’s what I thought to but the weird part was it didn’t sound like it

I’d be surprised if the rep’s manager (SDR manager) could’ve taken the call any better. That’s the root of the problem.

That’s bad and make me to guess that the level of coaching might also be a problem the company.
