Went from laid off as an AE to CS and never been happier

UPDATE: first commish check is double what I expected. Getting paid on team goals is a game changer!

Title says it all. Was laid off in November from a very esteemed company with a high repvue score, decided I never wanted to be in an environment that dishonest and cutthroat again, took some time to recalibrate, and landed a job at a cybersecurity firm in Customer Succsess. Rose tinted glasses are still on but I am incredibly happy, feel supported, so much less stressed, and making roughly the same money.

Good for you lol @PissBoy ... I can't even read your name without laughing. Christ. ok, keep it together... Though no one is pushing me out yet I've often thought of getting off the quota coaster and moving towards CS or even operations/support overall. I hope you found a great fit for the long run.

Lmao glad you enjoy it. What’s interesting is I still have a lot of earning and commission upside but none of the quota pressure. We are able to make a fair amount of money off of expansion deals and large renewals but the expectations on me are more focused on helping my clients rather than jam products down their throats. 10/10 recommend so far

Some around here might call this blasphemy, but it's the right move for many. Very different life, and that reduction in stress must be nice.

Glad you're enjoying it!

I’ve always sat on my ivory throne and judged CS but after some time off I realized that I was basing that judgement off of no actual facts. So far so good!

I love to judge CS but if you're ex AE you will have the midas touch and know how to grow, renew and expand

Happy to hear this. Maybe with your new glasses you can change your handle to something more optimistic, like, I dunno, happypissboy.

Glad to hear it - and that you're able to leverage your sales skills still. Nicely done in the job hunt, and wishing you the best of luck in your role.

who cares about the title, happiness, and stress are worth about 40k in a trade. Glad to see you didn't have to take a paycut though

Happy for you. There is something to be said about not having a quota hanging over you monthly/quarterly/annually. Being in CS can limit your income but as long as you're happy - you do you!

The same money? Really?

Yes! Higher base, and like a 65/35 split between base and commission. In my current position there is potential to make more money than I did as an AE!

I'm getting absolutely blown out of the AE job hunt right now so this intrigues me. How did you explain the change in interviews? Congrats on that sweet sweet raise!

Honestly it seems like the world of CS is turning into a revenue generator instead of a cost center, so that sales experience goes along way in terms of what they’re looking for now. I just applied for as many CS positions as possible, DMed hiring managers, and i got lucky

Congrats on making the right move for your happiness! I’m curious as to how your old company has a high Repvue score while also being toxic.

great Q, one i used to ask myself constantly. It used to be known as a top tier sales org (during the pandemic) but since then at the SMB level virtually no one hits quota. I have no clue who they’re paying to cook the books over there but every quarter they seem to whip up crazy projections out of thin air

Congrats! How did you find your CSM role? I've been at companies that had CSMs that don't have any commission potential and work crazy hours, way more stress than AEs just from work volume. How do you find a "good" CSM role like yours? TY

90% luck, 10% vetting companies and trying to have very honest and open interviews rather than me trying to “sell myself”

Sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward. Really glad to hear that you're enjoying this change!

I believe smart companies blend the AE and CS roles for everyone's benefit.

Finding my self in a similar position, what should you look for to determine if the CS role has a sales component? I have been looking at AM roles as well but interested in CS when there is an expansion element.

Ask about expansion goals in interview process. Typically even the comp structure can give you hints into how much of the role is based on upselling. If you see a 60/40 split between base and full OTE that’s usually a great indicator of sales right there
