"What are your salary expectations?"... is this a used car lot?

I imagine I'm not alone in saying there's a direct correlation between my career progress and my ability to detect sales tactics as they're hurled my way. I'm of the opinion that this "spider sense", like most superpowers, is a gift and a curse. For example, here are a few examples of what flies through my head on a regular basis:

"Would you like room for cream?"

  • Translation: Before I give you your Iced Americano, can Starbucks have the first sip?

"How much are you looking to spend today?"

  • Translation: Give me your wallet -- I'll take what I want and give you whatever I think you deserve.

"What are your salary expectations?"

  • Translation: While I could set the tone by sharing the salary range we've budgeted for this position... I'd like to stand behind the plausible deniability of "Can we afford you?" and give you an opportunity to undervalue yourself. And if this results in a joust and parry to see who shows their cards first, that's fine -- because that's how most healthy, honest, long-term employee-employer relationships start!

While I'm probably not open to having my opinion flipped on 1 and 2...

... I would love to be wrong about #3.

Am I missing something? Can you relate?

Also curious to hear your winning replies.

I always say that my salary range depends on the entire compensation and benefits package along with job satisfaction. Then I ask is there a range that they are looking to stay within for the role.

If they say "salary undetermined" I generally walk. Its my litmus test as to whether they are serious about the position and me.

Not really. Iโ€™m pretty forthcoming on my salary requirements. It just really kisses me off when they arenโ€™t so forthcoming.

I agree with you on 3 but itโ€™s only because Iโ€™m usually asked that by recruiters and letโ€™s be honest, they usually canโ€™t provide solid details around total comp, past attainment, etc. I also donโ€™t answer that question with a number, itโ€™s either questions back or I explain what Iโ€™m looking for outside of money - culture, leadership, travel, etc.

And I'd argue #2 saves everyone time. If you let the seller know your budget they can present realistic options. If I have Honda Fit budget it's a waste of everyone's time to show me a Cadillac.

Trueโ€ฆif itโ€™s tied to a product that has a known public value. Taking your metaphor literallyโ€ฆthere is little risk in telling a car salesperson you are a Honda budget. At least theyโ€™ll only try to screw you past that.

What if there isnโ€™t a known MSRP?

Lightweight example. Home services.

I had an arborist referred to me by a friend. Dude came by to quote cleaning up some trees.

โ€Whatโ€™s your budget so I can scope the work?โ€

โ€ฆzero clue. These are trees. Donโ€™t even know where to start.

โ€Have you received bids from anywhere else?โ€

โ€ฆshit. Heโ€™s about to find out I donโ€™t care enough to bid this out. I donโ€™t know what his labor should cost. I donโ€™t know what work is truly necessary. Iโ€™m definitely overpaying unless I do some work.

a courtesy that clearly saves money (in instances where cream is self-serve and/or added after customer receives coffee)

depends on how you look at it... but if I'm a coffee-shop owner I'd love it if all my customers took room for cream ;)

For my current job, I flat out told her what I wanted and she said yes so fast, Iโ€™m regretting not going higher. :).

That said, it was a good number I was happy with, so here I am.

One: no, thatโ€™s not what happens.

Two: more of a metaphorical โ€œgive me your walletโ€

Three: โ€œTypically when I hear about potential opportunities, I ask for the base/OTE and median compensation for this role to confirm a mutual fit.โ€ If they get sus about it, bye.

One: when you say "yes" to room for cream, they don't retain the coffee they would have poured you? again, my critique is only valid in instances where cream can be added after customer receives coffee.

Two: sounds like a metaphorical robbery

Three: Actually a solid response. thanks for the ammo :)

I am at the top 5% of my salary range for my role, so I actually kind of enjoy telling them my expectations because they go "wow, you are expensive" and I get to tell them that you get what you pay for.

In the past I've came in 20-40k above what I expect they looking to fill the position at. One, it sets expectations that you've been highly paid in the past and you expect to get top dollar for your talent and two it provides room for a healthy negotiation.

@Fourzlee, #2

What if they can get you out of that shit box you drove here in at the payment you want?

donโ€™t worry about the $10k down, 9% interest rate, $2500 in โ€œtransport/Doc feeโ€, and high margin warranty products.

BTW your trade is only worth $500

When applications (credit cards, apartment, etc.) ask how much you make, what do you put? Just your base? Total OTE? Somewhere in the middle?
