What is your perception of the product team?

Product Managers, Project Managers...the people that make the shit you sell.

I'd like to hear what your overall opinion is of the team(s) you work with. The more detail, the better.

I'm trying to gauge if there's any disconnects in my company and why and see if there's a pattern across industries.

There will be an inherent lifetime conflict in these roles (I have worked for 6 companies in my career so far to observe)

So much so I like to rant about them, I have learnt hard lesson that it is an essential conflict between sales and product.

;It is predictor of how far the company’s product will survive (B2B product usually)

;If sales is more dominant and product team is not (or overly agreeable to customer need through sales process) - this will result in a product team adding unnecessary customer specific features resulting in bloated product over the time that lose its charm and longevity (and company dies)

;If product is more dominant than Sales, there is no field listening happening that is needed to position product sufficiently to penetrate market and Sales people don’t make money (and then they leave) and the company dies

;Both above are extreme ends, as long as you are in between - you are doing great 😊

My last company was small and didn't really have a proper product owner, which complicated things quite a bit.

The product team at my new gig seems much better setup, and I'm looking forward to working with them.

They always seem to have a different perspective than me on what our product REALLY does lol

Love ours. They listen, they join calls, they take in client feedback and try to understand the pain points their product doesn’t address. Obviously not perfect but listening is the main skill and they crush it.

They are good at selective listening to what the customer(s) want, rather than blindly listening to every single customer's take on how their product should be and behave.

To me they ask to submit the request but never know what they want to prioritize and when to action them live.

Very smart people who have 0 clue what our customers want. But thats not really their fault, I blame leadership.
