What would you do?

what up savages - I've come to a crossroads.
so recently I was part of one of the big tech layoffs, leaving my Enterise SDR role in the dust. I was in the role for a year and was a top performer.

I've been offered another BDR gig at the big data player right now with a slight pay bump, but have to wait a year before AE consideration.

would you be aiming to make the AE jump somewhere else or stick out the bdr life for another year at a very promising company?

Usually pretty difficult to break into AE somewhere else with no closing experience. If you like the BDR job you’ve been offered, I would say take it

It’s a promising company, and opens the door to a more technical sale experience

Senior AE Mid Market
Sorry to hear about the layoff, but sounds like you’re landing on your feet fine with multiple paths to choose from.

Tough call and in most cases, I’d say you’re ready to move to AE. BUT being an AE at the right company with the right product is going to elevate any success you have there. So if this big data company has a solid reputation, good reviews (repvue and Glassdoor, etc.) product market fit, and they seem to be generating solid demand…I’d say that’s a great opportunity even if it’s not an AE role.

As recent as last year I thought that anyone could be a top AE anywhere. I’ve learned that’s not the case - too AE’s fail at shitty companies all the time because the financials of the company suck, the product sucks, leadership sucks, etc.

So I’d say stick it out for an AE position if you can find a company that sounds as attractive or more than this other one with the BDR offer.

I’d take the job offered. You can continue to look for an AE role in the meantime, but this one does offer a path and you mention some upside with experience. Congratulations on landing on your feet so quickly.
