Which move is best?

hey WR!

Have 1 year of top performing SDR experience (team lead) but looking to leave current company (mid-sized public software) due to some culture issues and hindered progression.

if you were in my shoes and were evaluating the next step where would you head?

- Series A BDR - similar industry, solid leadership, huge comp boost
- SFDC (or similar) BDR

Goal is AE within 12-18 months but unsure about after

next move

1) Pop to a Series B+ AE
2) Series A BDR ONLY if they have PMF and a solid VP/Sales Leader that has experience scaling.
3) Grave Digger

does SFDC mean salesforce?

I'd cast a wider net and not be cornered into those two options. Lot of great companies between the two.

What do you want out of your next opportunity? How are you establishing that the series A has great leadership?

Yeah exactly!

Definitely- those are the two that I have the most action going on with right now but I can segment them into: A) early stage startup or B) established SaaS as next move.

Want progression and solid comp Ofc but I would say I value culture and people highly as well. Would make 10k less to have a good relationship with my boss/coworkers

You should be elevating your career to the next step, not a lateral move.

Unless there is a clear (written path) at a new gig, you should be looking for AE roles.

Is there a reason there's no growth at your current gig?

Another BDR role at a different company with a higher payout, could you please explain a bit more about these kinda culture issues...

Remote so team doesn’t really get along - leadership is disconnected and out of touch. External hires have been filling spots I was “promised” for months (I’m bitter I get that lol)

What has been the push back on becoming an AE? A year is a good amount where you can at least test the waters

Definitely open to that jump but the progression here has changed. I need a year of Enterprise BDR at my current company (on top the SMB/mid sized experience I have now) to become AE. Open to a jump to an AE spot elsewhere but i feel like it’s always easier to get a promo internally. Curious on thoughts on that

Not true about getting promoted internally, people will leave externally for a promotion all the time. Especially if its going to take you being a SDR for 2 years

It might be hard given the economic climate, but might be worth to at least try

Have you done your background research onto the series A, how well it's funded, are people making their number, do they have a solid product with good market reception?

SFDC, as an established company, has training programs and, even though they have gone through rounds of layoffs, will also have a severance package should layoffs occur again.

As for culture: I'd avoid anything toxic, but will caution you that managers come and go, teams change and adjust, your go to market will change, so trying to find and keep that perfect workplace environment becomes difficult. Focus more on if what you're selling is a fit in the market and you have a good chance at making your quota and OTE. Culture is also something a company will sell you when they want to take advantage of you in other ways, such as lower base pay. Just go into this with your eyes open.

Series A is just to risky IMHO, they dont have Product Market Fit yet (most likely) you are banging out calls and trying to figure out ICP with the company and you'll be in the dark a lot by the environment you are in and through no fault of your own. With SFDC you'll know the exact use case, target user, who to be calling and probably have stability. Just my 2 cents

Do you like your current industry as a whole and can afford to take a career risk on a small start up? If so, option A.

You aren't going to find "better" company cultures - just different. And you have to hope the different culture fits you better.

Good luck!

Try AE somewhere if you've been performing, which it seems you are.

I would NOT go for a basically lateral move to a Series A. Salesforce does have a few benefits that @Sunbunny31laid out, but I'd still see if you can swing an AE gig.
