WILD 2023 - Diverse Work Experience - How to leverage it (or not) for new roles?

Hey Savages,

I had a wild 2023. I was laid off in May, fought boxing professionally, knocked motherfuckers out, learned to run ads and create bots and sold them as a freelancer to survive because boxing pay is shit unless you get to the 0.010% (Not complaining just facts of the industry).

Worked on a complex consulting project (Construction materials distributing company was looking to get into a spanish speaking market for a very specific niche and had no idea the size of the market, or competitive landscape... is it 100 or 1,000,000 people? are there 4 or 100 competitors? etc.)

i got this job as my gf was at a consulting company for a while, ex-boss got a client with a smaller budget and referred him to her. GF invited me to help.

It was an exciting but very challenging process as I had never done this before and it was only the two of us.

Tons of research, going into conferences and acting as buyers, distributors, presenting, etc.

Just mentioning this to give you a good picture of what I did and whther or not I can leverage it for a SAAS sales role? Or marketing?

This was a 3 month project while i was preparing for a pro fight, and celebrated ramadan as well

Also sold advertising services and AI Chatbots, which is what i am currently doing to continue getting some money. Prospected on various channels, ran ads, some profitable some not.

Now, I am looking to get a full time job, I have stopped fighting or at least paused it until I sort the other areas of my life.

I want to fully focus on my job and have a change in my life rytm as this past year was exciting but chaotic.

Now, My previous SaaS experience is as an SDR, however, I have learned a shit ton, I worked like a mad man, have closed SMB deals and learned and used so many skills.

So, I'd like to ideally get into an SMB AE role, however, I am having trouble on figuring out how to paint this picture without sounding like a crazy maniac?

or if I should not even mention all this and be more normal and boring like "Yeah, i did some freelance marketing this past year and now im back"?

And, given that my previous SAAS experience is as an SDR, is it feasible to get an SMB or JR AE Role? Should I change my previous titles to tell a different story without lying?

Thank you so much for reading all this if you did and I'd love your help.

Change your prior title from SDR to SMB AE.
Just apply at places and see how it goes. Itโ€™s cool in here, but Donโ€™t talk boxing or side jobs and gigs with interviews and future potential employers. They prob donโ€™t want a guy working for they that is getting punched in the head losing brain cells every weekend.
Just tell your job story. Make up a bit if you have to. But keep it all professional and keep the boxing stuff private is my thoughts.

The consulting gig as well? Just asking as it was something more serious than a side gig, more like a contractor role and i genuinely learned a lot an im super proud of it .
But if people in hiring managger roles such as yourself mention that i should leave it out i will

Channel your enthusiasm for consulting AND marketing into 1 hyper-qualified candidate with a passion for all of it. Salespeople- good ones anyway, are always consultants. You happen to be one with market research chops.

I wouldnโ€™t lead with the boxing thing, but I sure af would want to know about it if Iโ€™m on the hiring end. Now I get an accomplished marketing consultant with a compelling story and demonstrated discipline.

Youโ€™re 100% marketable. Go sell your authentic self.

Exactly! Polish off all the biz side aspects of what you've said and leverage the fact the boxing as a unique story for ice breaking and being memorable.

Admittedly didn't read all replies....but are you considering trying to scale the solo stuff you did? Sounds like you had some success with it...
