Story time
Cold LI message from a CEO of a boutique consulting firm. Know him from before when he was an AE.
Asked me to consider an open VP of BD role on their team. Fits my background and I am in the market.
I say sure and fulfill the request for an updated resume.
Goes dark for 3 weeks and I nurture once a week to push top of mind.
Finally get the feedback of: your time in role has been too short the past few years. We want someone who wants to stick around.
I nearly smashed my keyboard. Here's why:
1) You asked me to apply. I didn't come to you.
2) You can see my LinkedIn profile with the same dates as my resume. Did you read it?
3) Since 2017 I have been a part of 3 acquisitions that made me redundant. I picked good horses and you're penalizing me for success. Cool.
4) I was laid off twice in 2023. I had no control over two 5-month stints.
If you're a hiring manager and you're worried about tenure, why aren't you qualifying the tenure before placing a black mark on the resume? Especially when I put the reason for leaving as my FIRST BULLET on every role. Transparency is a gift I give in spades.
Anyways, rant over.
