A thread - Week #2 - 50 Days of Outbound as an AE

If I got a penny for every time I was disciplined as hell, I'd be broke af. With quarter-end shenanigans, I somehow found the time (not every day, to be honest) to outbound.

I was always a conservative, "go by the book" kind of an outbound SDR. I did things over and above my pay grade, but all safe experiments. This one time - as I do not have anything to lose and nobody really is breathing down my neck, I dared to do something different.

Sales leaders / Founders are my ideal personas. So I picked up 5-7 key accounts and actually signed up a 'demo' form on their website to:

  • Understand how the sales process is with those key accounts (it's kinda important for me to know this)
  • Get a sales call from these key accounts, then cross pitch by admitting honestly that I was doing some research. I did get hold of my ideal people in 2 such key accounts so far.

On another note, I got to say that sales process, sales pitch and even followup emails for most companies suck big time. WOW was I irritated.

So stats:

Not great luck this week, just 1 key account qualified to move forward. No real pipeline built yet.

I know it can't be this impossible or difficult to build a quality and appreciation-worthy pipeline, so we keep going.

P.S: I know I ate away someone's Round Robin by putting in a demo request. :)

It's a decent tactic. If I were you I'd keep that up and then try reaching out to the founder/s. Let them know you've been working with "xyz rep" to learn a bit more about their sales process and you think you can help.

I love this. Reminds me of a guy I worked with some moon phases ago whose dad sold dental office equipment. Never prospected- just made teeth cleaning appointments. Got launched from more offices than he sold, but he sold. The dentists were often too polite or too concerned with disrupting their office groove. So, theyโ€™d listen.

If I was on the receiving end of your tactic- Iโ€™d welcome it. You go!

Itโ€™s a good strategy, I like the idea. Do you think you are putting too much of time attending demos though I understand sales process is very important for you to know?

If that's the only way to get in the door...ok. But I'd be pissed if you said you only booked a demo for the reasons you stated. I'd probably hang up on you and let everyone know who you are what you tried to do. So you'd basically be burned. And before you think "what a #$%#$", just know that I value MY time much more than you value yours.

I'd much rather you reach out to me via LI and network with me there. I'd appreciate it as a fellow sales person and probably be willing to give you a name or two if I liked what you were pitching and if I thought my company needed it.
