AD SALES!

Anyone done advertising sales?

I'm planning to start some flex work for an app developer. They have a strong newsletter, and need someone to sell ad space. They also have some solid algorithms baked into 5 different APIs that they want to sell downstream from the ads.

It's got aspects of B2C and B2B that i'd be working with. pretty unique and interesting opportunity.

curious to hear if anyone's gone down this road

Done ad sales, I hated it. felt super grimy and it's a very mundane sell. but what do I know

Youโ€™re gonna sell in-app ads for an app developer along with space in a newsletter? Then youโ€™re gonna sell algorithms baked into APIs in a stream? Adtech MarTech is my wheelhouse. I canโ€™t make any sense of this. Did you vet the opp? Get revenue expectations?

Display ads in a newslette = low CPM small money micro SMB targets. In-app ads are the same only at the absolute bottom of the marketing food chain. Everyone that can afford it would rarely buy it. Anyone that would buy that probably canโ€™t afford it.

Dude, Iโ€™ve read your posts. Youโ€™re a pro. This ainโ€™t for you. DM if you like.

I need a job, and want to join this company in some capacity. this is my way in. it's going to turn into my side hustle once i get a w2.
I probably explained it poorly. Not selling in app ads. Selling ad space in the newsletter strictly. They have APIs developed to sell to big box retailers too to embed in their websites, create a more intuitive and custom experience for consumers.
I know it's probably beneath my realm of expertise. But this is phase 1 of building out a business development unit which i would build and lead towards the end of the year. If i can close some business, they'll raise more money, then i get paid and build out a team.
It's an industry i've wanted to join for a long time, and they're paying 50% commissions. worth a shot in my opinion.
wish i could DM, but im an android guy!

I now see the light! This just makes all of the sense now. Not that anyone around here requires my fucking approval, but this totally adds up. Go kill it! Adtech on a resume is a really good thing.

Hey i appreciate the feedback. That's why i asked for advice! one of my concerns is the fact they're not dialing in on one solid revenue stream, but seem to be jumping around looking for what will make them money. but, the two founders have successfully built other businesses and exited successfully. I trust their experience

One piece of advice I could give: Every org that sells ads is using some sort of technology or content or both to serve as a coat rack to hang their advertising on. But if you look at it purely that way, youโ€™ll miss the โ€œpersonalityโ€ of the product. It will have one - a distinct conceptual value prop that prospects will relate to. The faster you are at finding that sweet spot, where the product talks to its users, the faster youโ€™ll be able to dial in the right prospects. The faster you can sell the value of the personality, the easier the sale is to move away from pure metrics and hold rate.

A click never bought a fucking thing. It still takes a human. Keep your conversations centered there.

Think magazine rack if you remember those. If youโ€™re selling car and driver, you know who will buy it. It ainโ€™t the same one that buys ads in Cosmo. As basic as this is, itโ€™s never changed.

Yeah got to agree with Oldcloser, seems like theyโ€™re doing a lot and none of it joins together

I also work in AdTech with gaming developers (although not selling Ads) and it can be lucrative, especially with more and more brands moving to mobile and have a specific need to do in-app ads.

But THATโ€™S got to be the focus. None of this newsletter shit, baked in APIs shit.

Interesting. you think APIs and newsletter ads aren't a good biz model? in-app ads are where it's at?@NoToBANT

Itโ€™s just old and outdated. Whoโ€™s buying that ad space and how much is it worth?
